The obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary and continues to reveal its apparent disconnect with the people and the suffering.

The International Passport fees in Nigeria have now skyrocketed to ₦100,000 for a 32-page booklet and ₦200,000 for 64 pages. This is the third increase in just two years.

In a country where the new minimum wage is only ₦70,000, the cost of a single passport now exceeds a worker’s monthly salary, probably the only country in the world to achieve this feat.

Instead of making life easier, this government keeps shifting the burden onto ordinary Nigerians. It is alarming that the price of the international passport is higher than what workers earn in a month. -PO

This short post is for the attention of all Nigerians and also for the attention of the honorable minister @BTOofficial Pls kindly help share this until it gets to his notice.

Let’s do some analysis.
To get a USA passport, it costs $165. For someone on minimum wage in the usa ($7.25 per hour), they earn about $1,160 a month if they do only one job 8hrs a day for 5days a week. What is my point here? Even someone on minimum wage in the usa will effortlessly afford an American passport if they are interested.

To get a UK passport, it costs £82.50 if done online (or £100 if done on paper). For someone on minimum wage in the uk (£12.21 per hour for >20yr olds), they earn about £1,953 a month if they do only one job 8hrs a day for 5days a week. What is my point here? Even someone on minimum wage in the uk will effortlessly afford a British passport if they are interested.

Now come to Nigeria.
With the latest announcement from the nigerian immigration service, it will cost 100,000 naira to get the 32page international passport (or 200,000naira to get the 64page one). In Nigeria today, the minimum wage is 70,000naira. The vast majority of employers including state governments and private companies do NOT pay this minimum wage. And even if they did, what’s my point here?

If someone is on minimum wage in Nigeria, they will never be able to effortlessly afford a nigerian passport if they are interested.

The last time I did my nigerian passport,
I came online to praise the nigerian immigration service and also the minister Olubunmi Ojo. His hard work has no doubt been duly recognised by many Nigerians both home and abroad.

However on the recent increase in the application and processing fees for international passport for Nigerians living in Nigeria, I think the minister should review and reverse this increase.

The application and possession of an international passport must never ever be a luxury that the common man can not afford if they were to be interested. It is a huge aberration and a terrible anomaly in my personal opinion, that a minimum wage earner should be unable to afford to apply for an international passport.

This is an appeal and a public request.
Please kindly review these prices downwards for Nigerians. The hardship and horror of life in Nigeria is terrible enough for Nigerians living in Nigeria. Please kindly let us not add more to it.
