Now, I can't remember in verbatim what the senior pastor said in the short video clip I watched online, but the summary of his message was that as a person, you should be worried if you urgently need to raise a particular amount of money, and you don't have at least 3 friends that can either conveniently raise the said amount, or won't sleep until the required fund is raised. It got me pondering not because I had my reservations about the message, but the fact that as humans, we sometimes and inadvertently overrate our value in the lives of the people we refer to as friends, and you wouldn't even realize this until you are in a fix and require the help of these friends.
I recall in 2018 when I vied for the State House of Assembly seat. I reached out to some of my friends for support, and to say I was shocked by their utterances is an understatement of how I felt at the time. The consolation for me, however, was that they said it to me directly, so it wasn't a case of misinterpretation from a reported speech.
Of course, they didn't owe me, and I sincerely wouldn't have felt bad if it was just a case of not supporting me financially. I guess I was more disappointed in the realization that I had overrated my importance in the lives of these people as I believe I wouldn't have done what they did, but that's life. The interesting thing is that we are still friends, but at least I know where I stand now.
Anytime I think about the pastor's message, I can't help but wonder how we see friendship. Some people believe friendship has to be mutually beneficial. Others see it as an opportunity to oppress their peers. A few see friendship as family (in the real sense of it). The question is, which category do you belong to?
Some people you call friends only remember you when they need your help or when they are about to need it, but wouldn't hesitate to disappear during your trying times. Some others only remember you in your time of merriment. They are others who are genuinely interested in your personal development and would do everything to ensure you succeed. I'm asking again: Which category of friend are you?
Truth is nobody owes you nothing, but life would certainly be a lot better with friends who are genuinely committed to making you a better person by virtue of their actions. You dont know what it is to have a friend who wouldn't hesitate to chastise you when you are in the wrong while also ensuring you get back on your feet. The interesting thing about friendship is that it is not by how long you might have known each other, but how well you have each other's back. I have friends (older and younger) that I have known in less than 10 years that I can confidently say are my genuine friends.
In summary, while wishing to have a true friend, remember to always stay true to your friends as well. You might not be able to give financially, but your words, actions, and show of compassion go a very long way.
Shout out to all my friends and the real friends out there!!!
