"I don't even know the f***ing product lines. Where is all the revenue coming from?"
Sam Altman: "Actually... I think we should be more of a platform company than a product company."
*This 2 minute section is astounding because Sam Altman just admitted:
1) AI (LLMs) are a commodity; meaning they're easily substitutable, suffering from extreme boom and bust cycles.
2) OpenAI doesn't have any products, they're relying on users to build them.
3) They want to be a service provider, putting them in direct competition in a space already dominated by Oracle, Amazon, Microsoft and Google.
The scary part is Sam doesn't realize he just told the world that the emperor has no clothes.
US: More than 20,000 residents in Gary, Indiana, are entering their tenth day without electricity after a catastrophic 99 mph derecho flattened the local power grid.
In this predominantly Black city, where nearly a third of residents live in poverty, families are enduring dangerous summer heat without air conditioning, losing access to essential medical devices, and throwing out spoiled food and insulin.
Severe water system failures have also left many without clean running water, forcing households to rely on emergency city hubs for basic needs like hot meals and fresh water.
With streets left pitch-black and local schools completely closed, community anger is growing. Residents and local advocates are demanding to know why a vulnerable, working-class community is being left in the dark until Tuesday, 25 August, while wealthier surrounding areas had their power restored days ago.
So many MAGAs insisted Mamdani’s multilingual videos were AI-generated that he released a blooper reel to prove them wrong. Somehow, that only made them even angrier. 🥴
Egyptian farmers are testing putting solar panels over their crops, and the crops are doing better for it.
The shade cuts evaporation and heat stress. The panels make electricity. Same acre, two jobs.
One farm in South Sinai says its watermelons are growing well for the first time.
Right now the electricity runs irrigation equipment. The longer-term idea is powering desalination for the region's brackish water, which would make more farming feasible.
I HAVE CANCER.
Eye cancer and skin cancer. Both melanoma.
That means long-term monitoring. MRIs every six months to make sure it hasn't spread. Skin checks every three months for precancerous or suspicious moles.
A month ago I had surgery to remove another irregular mole. The incision became infected. I need my doctor to check that it's healing properly.
My appointment is THIS FRIDAY, August 21.
I leave town August 23 through September 8.
And I just learned I may not be allowed to see my doctor because my insurance referral expired.
So I contacted Anthem.
Their response?
“Our Utilization Management Department will review it for approval. They have up to 15 days to review non-urgent requests.”
NON-URGENT?
I HAVE FUCKING CANCER.
Melanoma does not give a shit about Anthem's 15-day administrative review window.
My response to them was simple:
“NON-URGENT? CANCER DOES NOT WAIT!”
Crickets.
This is what makes me so fucking angry about the American healthcare system.
I have insurance. I did what I was supposed to do. I have doctors. I have a documented cancer history. I have an appointment. And an insurance company bureaucracy can still insert itself between me and my doctor and decide that monitoring CANCER is “non-urgent.”
And here's the part that scares me even more:
I can afford to pay for this appointment out of pocket if I have to.
Millions of Americans can't.
What happens to the person who can't put a credit card down and say “fuck it, I'll pay”?
They wait.
They postpone the scan.
They skip the follow-up.
They hope the suspicious mole is nothing.
They pray the cancer hasn't spread while an insurance company takes its allotted time to “review” whether their care is worthy of approval.
And THIS is the healthcare system politicians have decided we can afford to make harder to access.
Instead of strengthening coverage, Washington passed the Big Beautiful Bill with major cuts and restrictions to healthcare programs while enhanced ACA tax credits were allowed to expire.
So when people talk about Medicaid cuts and #RestoreACATaxCredits like they're abstract budget numbers, understand what we're actually talking about:
REAL PEOPLE DELAYING REAL MEDICAL CARE BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO FIGHT THEIR INSURANCE COMPANY.
I can fight Anthem.
I can make noise.
I can pay out of pocket.
What the fuck happens to the person who can't?
This isn't theoretical to me.
It's cancer.
And this isn't even the first time Anthem has put me through this bullshit.
See below for what happened when I needed an MRI to make sure melanoma hadn't spread to my lungs and kidneys.
