So, here's how the story goes...

(Based on the latest news.)

One morning, President Zelensky suddenly discovers that Ukraine is supposedly fighting for democratic values—and that Russia may launch another mobilization campaign in just two months.

"We need a strong response!" Zelensky declares, clutching his crumpled "resilience plan."

So, in the spirit of democratic values, he summons the head of another branch of government—the prime minister, in a parliamentary-presidential republic—and informs her that she's being dismissed.

Apparently, she had done such a poor job that, after firing her, Zelensky awarded her a state decoration.

The prime minister was removed because she was supposedly needed for the critically important post of ambassador to the United States. The current ambassador was even dismissed to make room for her.

Then she declined.

Oh well.

Zelensky wipes his glasses and, for the first time in four years, notices problems with the system of forced mobilization that his own administration created and oversaw—a system he had ignored despite numerous controversies and deaths.

"What should we do?" he wonders.

"We need a strong response! Let's fire those responsible and appoint someone effective!"

So he dismisses the defense minister—even though the defense minister is not responsible for mobilization.

He promises to appoint a new defense minister—the former interior minister—who will quickly put an end to this disgrace.

The same interior minister whose ministry actually had responsibility for many aspects of how mobilization was carried out.

Never mind that, once appointed, the new defense minister still would not be responsible for mobilization, because it isn't part of the job description.

But, to be fair, perhaps I'm blaming Zelensky unfairly.

After all, we're told he didn't dismiss the old defense minister or choose the new one.

According to the official version, those decisions were made by the new prime minister after consultations.

It was supposedly the prime minister who decided not to keep Fedorov in the new government.

That's what we were told.

And yet, because the prime minister was supposedly making all the decisions, Zelensky then personally decided not to appoint the former interior minister after all and instead selected a different acting defense minister.

Because, obviously, the prime minister was in charge of everything.

The goal, we're told, is to strengthen the country ahead of a possible Russian mobilization.

Which somehow means entering that period without a permanent defense minister, without a foreign minister, while Parliament leaves for a month-long recess.

And apparently, not having an ambassador in Washington doesn't matter either.

Nor does the fact that yesterday's presumed defense minister—the former interior minister, for whom promotional videos had already been recorded—suddenly finds himself politically unemployed.

Everything is perfectly logical, consistent, and brilliantly planned.

Just two months before what is being described as a serious security threat.

Resign, Mr. Zelensky.

The country would be better off without decisions like these, appointments like these, and planning like this.
