Today marked the opening of the 2025 Symposium on Ecosystem Restoration at the University of Nairobi—running from June 4th to 6th.
Hearts of Green Organization and Kenyatta University kicked off with a powerful presentation on:
DCI MARKS 2025 LABOUR DAY BY PLANTING 3,000 TREES
“Climate change poses one of the greatest challenges of our time. As we commemorate Labour Day, let us renew our commitment to preserving our planet”. These were the words of the Director DCI Mr. Mohamed Amin, delivered by the Director of Personnel at DCI, Mr. Francis Ndiema, who led all DCI directorates to a tree planting exercise at the DCI Headquarters officers’ residential area to mark the 2025 Labour Day celebrations. This is in cognizance of the President’s commitment to increase Kenya’s forest cover by 15 billion trees before 2032.
Mr. Amin expressed immense pride while noting that the DCI has planted over 19,200 seedlings of diverse species across key locations, including Mazingira Complex, the National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA), the Magadi Training Field, and the Kiambu County Police Headquarters, adding that this remarkable achievement reflects our unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Director Amin also intimated his gratitude to Equity Bank who generously donated the 3,000 trees, noting that this act of kindness not only helps us beautify our surroundings but also contributes to our efforts in creating a greener and more sustainable environment.
On his part, the Director of Personnel, Mr. Francis Ndiema called upon the officers to maintain the firm unity, not only when engaging in activities that achieve organizational goals, but also in initiatives that benefit the environment and the community at large, while maintaining the positive image of the DCI. This, he said, will go a long way in addressing ecological challenges. Stressing on the shared responsibility that each individual bears in fostering a healthier environment, he pointed out the many benefits that come with expanding the country's forest cover, key among them; mitigating the effects of climate change and desertification.
The Head of Reforms, Research and Innovation Development (RRID) Dr. Philip Ouma, PhD, in whom the responsibility of ensuring the sustainability of the tree growing initiative is bestowed, conveyed his appreciation to the officers for their resolute devotion to safeguarding the environment. He noted that their partaking in this initiative mirrors a collective endeavor towards a green future.
Equity Bank’s implementing partners, Hearts of Green Organization, led by their Executive Director, Mr. Moses Muya, in partnership with the Wangari Maathai Institute under the University of Nairobi, also graced the event, showcasing their Landscape Repair and Transformation Program (LANSRET). Wangari Maathai Institute Director, Prof. Thuita Thenya, resounded Prof. Wangari Maathai’s words, “when we plant trees, we plant seeds of hope”, accentuating the indispensable need to nurture the newly planted trees, adding that they can only serve their purpose when cared upon. The representatives from the two Institutions were gifted several copies of the tenth Edition of the DCI Magazine, a biannual DCI publication.
Other senior officers present were the Administrative Secretary, the Director Planning, the Director Complaints, the Director Training, The Director Operations, The Deputy Commandant NCIA, the Director Liaison and Corporate Communication (L&CC), and the Director of Legal Affairs, among others who represented their respective directorates.
