But Carver understood something deeper.
Environmental restoration as social justice.
Teaching sustainable farming gave Black farmers economic independence in a system designed to keep them dependent.

Developed 300+ products from peanuts alone.
Cooking oil to printer ink to cosmetics. Dozens of sweet potato and soybean uses.
Published bulletins teaching sustainable practices.
Transformed Southern agriculture from extractive to regenerative.

Taught farmers to plant peanuts, sweet potatoes, soybeans alongside cotton.
Nitrogen-fixing crops restored soil fertility.
Problem: no markets existed for alternative crops.
So Carver created the markets.

In 1896, went South to teach at Tuskegee Institute.
The South was in agricultural crisis.
Decades of cotton monoculture had destroyed soil. Farmers trapped in debt cycles and failing crops.
Carver saw the solution: crop rotation.

Carver was born around 1864.
Exact birth date never recorded — enslaved people weren't worth documenting.
After emancipation, walked hundreds of miles seeking education Black children were denied.
Became first Black student at Iowa State. Earned master's in agriculture.
