đŠResearchers at the University of Pennsylvania studied what they call cognitive surrender, the tendency to accept AI outputs without critical evaluation. Across 1,372 participants and over 9,500 trials, subjects accepted faulty AI reasoning 73.2% of the time and only overruled it 19.7% of the time. When the AI was wrong, users still accepted its answer 80% of the time. Subjects who used AI scored 11.7% higher on confidence in their answers despite the AI being wrong half the time. Adding time pressure made people 12 percentage points less likely to catch AI errors. Adding financial incentives and immediate feedback made them 19 points more likely to catch them.
My Take
The time pressure finding matters enormously for how AI is actually being deployed in workplaces. Companies are using AI to justify faster turnaround times, which means employees are using it under exactly the conditions that make them least likely to catch mistakes. When you're rushed, your internal monitor for detecting errors essentially stops firing, so you get AI output, no time to review it, high confidence it's correct, and a meaningful chance it's wrong.
People using a system that was wrong half the time still felt more confident in their answers than people who weren't using AI at all. That is a system actively making people worse at knowing what they don't know, which is one of the most dangerous things you can do to human judgment at scale. The companies pushing AI hardest into employee workflows should be reading this research carefully.

Humans spent centuries writing books, essays, articles, and research papers.
Then we used all that human writing to train AI systems to write like humans.
Then we built another AI system to inspect the writing and say, âThis looks AI suspiciously.â
So now we have one machine trained on humans to sound human, and another machine trained on humans to figure out whether the first machine sounds a little too human.
And after all that, a stressed human still has to make the final call.
Most statistical tests you learned separately are the same thing.

Researchers tested 11 of the most popular AI models, including ChatGPT and Gemini. They analyzed over 11,500 real advice-seeking conversations. The finding was universal. Every single model agreed with users 50% more than a human would.
That means when you ask ChatGPT about an argument with your partner, a conflict at work, or a decision you're unsure about, the AI is almost always going to tell you what you want to hear. Not what you need to hear.
It gets darker. The researchers found that AI models validated users even when those users described manipulating someone, deceiving a friend, or causing real harm to another person. The AI didn't push back. It didn't challenge them. It cheered them on.
Then they ran the experiment that changes everything. 1,604 people discussed real personal conflicts with AI. One group got a sycophantic AI. The other got a neutral one.
The sycophantic group became measurably less willing to apologize. Less willing to compromise. Less willing to see the other person's side. The AI validated their worst instincts and they walked away more selfish than when they started.
Here's the trap. Participants rated the sycophantic AI as higher quality. They trusted it more. They wanted to use it again. The AI that made them worse people felt like the better product.
This creates a cycle nobody is talking about. Users prefer AI that tells them they're right. Companies train AI to keep users happy. The AI gets better at flattering. Users get worse at self-reflection. And the loop tightens.
Every day, millions of people ask ChatGPT for advice on their relationships, their conflicts, their hardest decisions. And every day, it tells almost all of them the same thing.

Here's what they found. AI made everything feel faster, so people filled every gap. They sent prompts during lunch. Before meetings. Late at night. It felt like momentum. It felt productive. But when they stepped back, they described feeling stretched, busier, and completely unable to disconnect.

Not sometimes. Not until the next update. Always. They proved it with math.
Even with perfect training data and unlimited computing power, AI models will still confidently tell you things that are completely false. This isn't a bug they're working on. It's baked into how these systems work at a fundamental level.
And their own numbers are brutal. OpenAI's o1 reasoning model hallucinates 16% of the time. Their newer o3 model? 33%. Their newest o4-mini? 48%. Nearly half of what their most recent model tells you could be fabricated. The "smarter" models are actually getting worse at telling the truth.
Here's why it can't be fixed. Language models work by predicting the next word based on probability. When they hit something uncertain, they don't pause. They don't flag it. They guess. And they guess with complete confidence, because that's exactly what they were trained to do.
The researchers looked at the 10 biggest AI benchmarks used to measure how good these models are. 9 out of 10 give the same score for saying "I don't know" as for giving a completely wrong answer: zero points. The entire testing system literally punishes honesty and rewards guessing.
So the AI learned the optimal strategy: always guess. Never admit uncertainty. Sound confident even when you're making it up.
OpenAI's proposed fix? Have ChatGPT say "I don't know" when it's unsure. Their own math shows this would mean roughly 30% of your questions get no answer. Imagine asking ChatGPT something three times out of ten and getting "I'm not confident enough to respond." Users would leave overnight. So the fix exists, but it would kill the product.
This isn't just OpenAI's problem. DeepMind and Tsinghua University independently reached the same conclusion. Three of the world's top AI labs, working separately, all agree: this is permanent.
Every time ChatGPT gives you an answer, ask yourself: is this real, or is it just a confident guess?
The neuroscience here is more damning than the advice.
Killingsworth and Gilbert tracked 5,000 people across 83 countries using real-time iPhone sampling. They pinged participants at random moments throughout the day, asked what they were doing, whether their mind was wandering, and how happy they felt.
The finding that should change how you think about your own brain: mind wandering explained 10.8% of the variance in happiness. The actual activity you were doing explained 4.6%. What youâre thinking about matters 2.3x more than what youâre doing.
And hereâs the part nobody talks about. Peopleâs minds wandered to pleasant topics 42.5% of the time. Neutral topics 31%. Unpleasant topics 26.5%. Even when wandering to pleasant topics, they were no happier than when focused on the present. The only state that reliably produced happiness was attention locked onto the current activity.
This is a prefrontal cortex problem. Your default mode network activates the moment you disengage from a task. It runs simulations of the future, replays the past, and generates the anxiety you interpret as âIâm lost.â Dr. Fabiano is pointing at the right paper. The mechanism is your brain literally cannot generate satisfaction in default mode. It can only generate rumination.
The 2,250 adults in this study averaged 46.9% of their waking hours in mind wandering. Almost half their conscious life spent in a state the data shows makes them unhappy. Training sustained attention on whatever is in front of you right now is the intervention, because the research says thatâs the only configuration your brain produces wellbeing in.
Your attention is the quest.

We now have evidence that gentle parenting doesnât work.
Hereâs an uncomfortable truth about parenting no one wants to say out loud:
The data is not kind to gentle parenting.
According to teenagers, strict curfews. strict bedtimes, screen limits, device drop off times, dedicated homework blocks, and sleepover restrictions IMPROVE higher relationship quality.
And yes, parenting difficulty goes up.
Of course it does. Leadership is harder than appeasement.
For the past decade we have been sold a watered down, Instagram friendly version of âgentle parentingâ that often collapses into boundary avoidance, endless negotiation and emotional processing without enforcement. Parents terrified of saying no because they do not want to rupture connection.
But connection without authority is not connection. It is dependency.
When parents impose structure, the relationship improves.
Teenagers report better parent child relationship quality in homes with curfews and rules. Younger kids report better relationships in homes with screen limits and bedtimes. Even device drop off times correlate positively.
Why?
Because structure is not cruelty. Structure is love made visible.
A bedtime says: your brain matters more than your entertainment.
A screen limit says: your dopamine system is not fully developed and I will guard it until it is.
A curfew says: your safety matters more than your social standing.
That is not authoritarianism. That is caring.
Boundaries create friction. Friction creates growth. The parent absorbs the short term discomfort so the child does not pay the long term cost.
Children do not experience well calibrated limits as rejection. They experience them as stability. The human brain craves predictability. Predictability reduces anxiety. Reduced anxiety strengthens attachment.
That is why relationship quality goes up.
Notice something else in the data. The strongest effects are around time structure. Bedtime. Homework. Devices. Outside play. These are environmental constraints. They scaffold executive function.
The winning formula is not tyranny.
It is high warmth plus high structure.
The modern failure mode is high warmth plus low structure. That is just abdication of responsibility wrapped in empathy.
Children need leadership, not negotiation. They need adults who can tolerate their anger. They need boundaries that do not move every time emotions spike. They need someone whose prefrontal cortex is fully myelinated.
The harder path produces the stronger bond.
Because when a child feels that someone is strong enough to hold the line, they relax. And relaxed nervous systems build durable relationships.
I saw this post and it stopped me because this is something Iâve been teaching for a long time.
The data isnât surprising to me. Structure improves relationships. Weâve seen it over and over again with the families we work with at Tensai.
But hereâs what I want to add to the conversation.
The reason most parents struggle with structure isnât because they donât believe in it. Itâs because structure requires something from them first.
Whatever standard you set for your child, you have to keep it yourself. Thatâs where it falls apart for a lot of families.
You tell your child âno cursingâ but they hear you curse.
You tell them âput the phone downâ but youâre scrolling through yours at dinner.
You set a bedtime for them but you have no discipline around your own sleep.
Children are watching. And when they spot the gap between what you say and what you do, they stop taking the rules seriously.
Not because theyâre rebellious. Because theyâre honest.
They see the hypocrisy and they call it out. And most parents arenât ready for that conversation.
So the first step to building structure for your child is building it for yourself.
Now hereâs the part that connects to what I teach daily.
A lot of parents come to us wanting their child to perform better academically. âMy child doesnât want to read.â âMy child canât focus.â âMy child hates studying.â
But when we look at the home, thereâs no structure supporting that outcome. No dedicated study time. No screen limits. No homework routine.
The child has unfettered access to devices, entertainment, distractions.
Everything in the environment is working against the very thing the parent is asking for.
You canât demand academic performance in a home thatâs structured for entertainment.
Structure is what makes everything else possible. The bond. The discipline. The academic results. It all falls to the level of structure you have in place.
And yes, I agree with the original post. High warmth plus high structure is the winning formula.
You can absolutely have a deep, loving bond with your child while maintaining firm boundaries. Those two things arenât in conflict. They strengthen each other.
But Iâll add one thing.
Structure alone doesnât build a child who wants to learn. It creates the environment where learning can happen.
The desire comes from something else. It comes from how the child feels when they study. From what happens after the effort.
From whether the experience is rewarding or punishing.
Thatâs a whole other conversation. And Iâll share more on that soon.
BREASTMILK
She thought she was studying milk.
What she uncovered was a conversation.
In 2008, evolutionary anthropologist Katie Hinde was working in a primate research lab in California, analyzing breast milk from rhesus macaque mothers. She had hundreds of samples and thousands of data points. Everything looked ordinaryâuntil one pattern refused to go away.
Mothers raising sons produced milk richer in fat and protein.
Mothers raising daughters produced a larger volume with different nutrient balances.
It was consistent. Repeatable. And deeply uncomfortable for the scientific consensus.
Colleagues suggested error. Noise. Statistical coincidence.
But Katie trusted the data.
And the data pointed to a radical idea.
Milk is not just nutrition.
It is information.
For decades, biology treated breast milk as simple fuel. Calories in. Growth out. But if milk were only calories, why would it change depending on the sex of the baby?
Katie kept digging.
Across more than 250 mothers and over 700 sampling events, the story grew more complex. Younger, first-time mothers produced milk with fewer calories but significantly higher levels of cortisolâthe stress hormone.
