CCE is proud to serve as the convener of the District Task Force on Jails & Justice.
We hope that DC leaders use this report card & the Task Force's recommendations as a roadmap to enacting evidence-based, community-led reforms to advance public safety. https://t.co/GGtPQ0LNSR
Removing the mandatory language “shall” in the IRAA statute will give DC judges authority to deny release to juvenile lifers even if they are no longer a danger and their release is in the interest of Justice. A step in the wrong direction @MayorBowser
Sentences that don’t allow for review after adolescent development for individuals sentenced when they were children are especially egregious. Let’s stop sentencing children and young adults to life without the possibility of parole. @theCFSY@SentencingProj
@jsoble1 Extreme sentencing practices have resulted in an aging population of folks who are elderly and suffering from chronic medical issues lingering in our prisons. They remained detained well beyond the point of diminishing returns. We must do better.
Avis Buchanan, former director of @pdsdc, joins this honorable group of Justice Potter Stewart Award winners next Thursday evening for decades of outstanding contributions to legal aid & justice administration in DC. Congratulations, Avis! https://t.co/o0aukuJaye
Join CCE next Thursday from 6-7:30 pm at @AnacostiaArts for a conversation about DC's criminal legal system!

2 yrs ago, #Maryland finally passed a law removing the governor from parole decisions. The law allows for healthy people to be released w/o Gov approval but left behind terminally ill inmates. Fixing this should not be controversial. PERIOD. Sb33
It was clearly the intent of the legislature to remove the Governor from all types of parole in 2021. Due to bill deaf error, medical parole was overlooked @LukeClippinger@SpeakerAJones put SB 33 on a vote list tomorrow. It’s time to fix this mistake and depoliticize parole.
@jsoble1 The broken parole systems that make it impossible for people to earn their release long after they have been rehabilitated also incorporate inherent racial biases. Black people and entire communities are disproportionately impacted by these broken systems.
Public defenders are on the front lines fighting for equal justice. It’s an uphill struggle against a broken system and without enough resources. Today on the 60th anniversary of the Gideon decision, and every day, public defenders have my deepest respect. https://t.co/8FEJnXLeyJ
Today is #PublicDefenseDay! Public Defenders continue to protect our 6th amendment right to counsel and show up for their communities every day. Let’s show up for them.
