If you've followed me over the last 6 months, you've likely seen the ongoing debate @GaiusKonstantin and I have had, publicly and in good fun, over branding versus professional reviews, and which matters more for authors.

We eventually took that conversation offline to work through it properly. As I explained to him, and as we later co-wrote in our Book-Reader Buying Cycle article (published at the Nook a few weeks ago), the reader journey moves through several distinct stages. Reviews are critical, particularly at the conversion and trial stage, but visibility has to be addressed first. Without it, there's no audience to convert in the first place.

Over the following months, we planned and developed the best way to support authors. We upgraded the site, brought on a dedicated artist, and hired an in-house editor to manage traffic and social media. Together, we also built out our rating guidelines, systems, and procedures. The Nook is no longer just the book blog I started as a hobby. We're now in the process of registering it as a formal business entity in both our countries of origin, because we believe in accountability and liability.

So what's new at the Nook?

We continue to feature books, because we believe this is a key part of your visibility, helping you become searchable on platforms like Google. A well-crafted, magazine-style feature tells readers why your book is worth a look. It isn't just about how good your book is; it's about your book and you.

We continue to spotlight authors too, so readers get to know the person behind the pages. We've started publishing industry insights in editorial format, along with marketing and branding tools to support you. And more recently, we've launched professional book reviews, check out Gaius's latest posts. We're actively looking for more reviewers to join us.

Before year-end, we'll be rolling out a new feature to help your books reach their full potential beyond just readers, something we're all genuinely excited about.

Reviews: A Look Ahead

Good news authors, https://t.co/X2jSOu3LXA will shortly announce a new dedicated feature, Book Reviews.

While the Nook has featured reviews in the past, as well as in-depth book features, these will be a more formalized concept and offer authors the opportunity to include a seal on their book cover.

The ratings are self-explanatory…or maybe not, so let me briefly qualify them:

A Five Star rating is perfection and excellence combined.

Four Stars indicates a very good book with slight flaws.

Three stars is still a good book but one with flaws.

Anything below three stars will not receive a seal, and will most likely not be published, allowing authors to revise their work without having received “the kiss of death.”

So, if you have any thoughts on the matter, now is the time to speak up, we will consider any serious feedback.
