Today's @TheLancet editorial reflects on my latest book, Chemically Imbalanced, and on the 'creeping medicalisation of a widening array of life problems' @flint_books https://t.co/ocr8Cqtu3f
Pleased that my article 'Psychiatric diagnosis as a political device' was chosen for a special edition of Social Theory & Health, available open access for a bit https://t.co/OQenx4N3Ge
'The median duration of antidepressant use in the United States was approximately 5 years (260 weeks), while the median trial duration was 8 weeks (IQR: 6-12 weeks)'. Hence, we lack evidence that long-term use of antidepressants is safe or effective https://t.co/b0Lhqto03u

‘Do antidepressants really work?’ In her new book, @joannamoncrieff describes how exposing limitations and harms of these drugs has resulted in attacks and abuse https://t.co/HdhcWYRFDf
Psychiatrist professor Joanna Moncrieff explains in an interview https://t.co/YyCcrSme3u that depression is not a physical illness; antidepressants don’t work; the chemical imbalance is a myth; emotional problems cannot be resolved with a pill – they are social issues.
'Brain language has wrongly permeated our conception of ourselves over recent years...Psychiatry must stop reducing people to their brains. Restricting its interventions to psychopharmacology inevitably does so.'
The largest ever study of antidepressants significantly misreported and inflated the effects of antidepressants but neither the medical community nor the media are interested https://t.co/YuEqDsYwaQ
Why was our umbrella review of serotonin and depression controversial? Perversely, critics said the findings were obvious but also tried to challenge them. In my new book I examine the backlash and what may have motivated it https://t.co/S0RpYybYfT
Do antidepressants actually 'work,' and if not why do people think they do? My new book examines the latest evidence https://t.co/S0RpYybYfT @flint_books
Antidepressants are not antidepressants! They are a motley collection of chemicals that alter normal brain function in various ways we do not fully understand. To read more: https://t.co/S0RpYybqql
The chemical imbalance theory of depression is fundamental to how we think about depression and emotions now. It is the basis for the idea that they can be treated by drugs (e.g. antidepressants). But it is not supported by evidence, as people had been led to believe.
"Human" by Cat Black
"At 17, I told a GP that I was depressed and cried a lot. He diagnosed me with ‘Major Depressive Disorder’ after a 20-minute consultation and prescribed me my first ‘antidepressant’, Venlafaxine. He never asked me why I cried."

@Matt36518076622@Rozewicz@markhoro Also, which studies? One has to be aware of the conflict of interest in some of these studies. Another issue is that seeing improvement in patients is not what we are denying since it can be the placebo effect.
The Iatrogenic Gaze: How We Forgot That Psychiatry Could Be Harmful

The victims of psychiatric iatrogenesis believed they were taking a vitamin, only to later realize it was poison.
