SENATE BACKS SENATOR SADIQ UMAR’S MOTION TO REMOVE BARRIERS FOR LOCAL AND YOUTH-LED BUSINESSES IN NIGERIA'S PROCUREMENT PROCESS

The Nigerian Senate under the leadership of Sen. Godswill Akpabio GCON has adopted a motion sponsored by Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar (Kwara North), Chairman of the Senate Committees on Trade & Investment and Rules & Business, seeking the removal of key barriers that reduce the chances of indigenous, youth-led, and small businesses from accessing federal contracts.

The Senate following the adoption of prayers made by Sen. Sadiq and widely supported by other Senators directed relevant agencies to eliminate requirements such as multi-year tax clearance, PENCOM compliance, prior federal experience, amongst other prerequisites which have long excluded local contractors from the procurement process in the country.

Senator Sadiq applauding the resolve of the Senate on the motion, emphasized that this move will stimulate grassroots development, create real economic opportunities at the local level and empower the last-mile Nigerian.

> “This is a win for the young entrepreneur and the small-town contractor. We're opening up government contracts to those who have been locked out for too long."

The motion also proposes a three-tier bidding system, creation of FIRS Local Desks across the 774 LGAs, and provision of tax incentives to support small businesses aligning with the goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Senator Sadiq Umar, through his unwavering commitment to people centered legislation has reaffirmed his devotion via this motion to inclusive economic growth, ensuring federal spending works for every Nigerian community.
