This is not how the FTZ works. Stop misinforming people. Importing raw materials, machinery, and equipment attracts zero duty if the manufactured or finished items are exported to other countries.

If the items manufactured in the FTZ are moved out of the FTZ into the local market, they pay customs duty on the value of the imported materials.

If the FTZ was used as a transit warehouse to import finished/manufactured goods to sell in our local market, they pay the full customs duty and other fees on the cost of the item.

The Chinese guys know that the market is here, and they can do their light manufacturing, assemble, pay for cheap labour, and pay a fraction of the customs duty on the raw materials imported to sell to the local markets and also export to neighbouring countries. They are everywhere in the Ogun FTZ. They are setting up light factories every day.

The essence of the Free Trade Zone is to encourage industries to set up and export products by giving them lower tariffs on raw materials and a tax holiday. As a trader who imports finished items, you can't compete because they will come for your margins and cut you off as a middleman.

The buy and resell model is too easy for them to replicate.

First of all, that port works but not in full capacity.

Now let's delve into the technicalities;

1. There is a shallow draft on that 109km channel which means it cannot accommodate modern vessels which are between 12-16 meters in draft compared to the old vessels of 5-7meters that it used to dock.

2. The submerged oil pipes and facilities won't allow for that channel to be dreged so as to be able to accommodate modern vessels and containers.

3. The pipelines because shallow wont allow for dredging to take place. This means that the pipelines and infrastructures on that entire channel has to be relocated which is very very complex.

4. Let's not forget that Lagos, Ogun, Ibadan are the hub of manufacturers in Nigeria and this makes the Lagos port their delight.

As a Warri boy, I honestly want that port to work optimally. But we have to face some of these realities
