I suspect that heavy traffic when voting commenced caused a glitch in the technology and forced the platform offline. As a result, a lot of people were disenfranchised. This is the fault of the service provider.

The credibility of any election depends as much on its integrity as on its outcome. The NBA owes its members an honest review of what went wrong and how such failures will never happen again.

THE NBA MUST BE BOLD ENOUGH TO ADMIT ITS ELECTORAL FAILURES

The 2026 NBA National Election has produced a winner. Congratulations to Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, who was elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association with 12,317 votes.

However, beyond who won lies a more fundamental question about the integrity and effectiveness of the electoral process.

To put the numbers in perspective, the winners of the NBA presidential elections since 2014 have polled as follows:

2014 – Augustine Alegeh, SAN: 691 votes (under the now abolished delegate system)

2016 – Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, SAN: 3,055 votes

2018 – Paul Usoro, SAN: 4,509 votes

2020 – Olumide Akpata: 9,891 votes

2022 – Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN: 22,342 votes

2024 – Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN: 20,435 votes

2026 – Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN: 12,317 votes

These figures tell a compelling story. After years of rising participation under universal suffrage, the sharp decline in votes in 2026 cannot simply be ignored. It is, at the very least, a strong indicator of widespread disenfranchisement and lends credence to the many reports from lawyers who made repeated attempts to vote but were unable to do so.

I experienced this firsthand. I was repeatedly kicked out of the voting platform and had to make several attempts before I was eventually able to cast my vote. Many colleagues were not as fortunate.

A winner has rightly been declared, and that should be respected. But the NBA leadership and the ECNBA must also acknowledge what was evident to thousands of members; the electoral process fell below the standard expected of our Association.

The Bar owes every candidate, and indeed every member, a candid explanation of what went wrong, why the system failed so many voters, and the concrete reforms that will be implemented to ensure this does not happen again.

It would be BOLD arrogance to pretend the process was seamless when it plainly was not. It would be even more shortsighted to dismiss the legitimate concerns and grievances expressed by candidates and voters alike.

The numbers do not lie. They tell a vivid story.

If the Bar is to be truly BOLD, it must have the courage to acknowledge its shortcomings, learn from this experience, and commit itself to meaningful electoral reforms that restore confidence in the process.

Interesting how perspectives change. In 2024, those of us who raised concerns were mocked and dismissed. Today, the same voices are acknowledging what they once ridiculed.

Perhaps now we can all agree that electoral integrity should never depend on whose candidate is affected.

This is the spirit the Bar needs. Respect the outcome, but never stop advocating for electoral integrity. A credible process is in everyone’s interest, regardless of who wins. That is how institutions grow.

In this election, irrespective of the result, I remain super proud of my choice.

Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe’s vision for the bar resonated, his goals reflected the daring and consistent challenge on possibilities I live by, his focus on issues and a display of extreme understanding of what young lawyers go through endeared me.

I have been there.

It was never about gender for me.

It was about my conviction.

My conviction was with LOA.

An election fraught with challenges and irregularities that affected all sides of the coin not withstanding, I congratulate president-elect, Mrs. Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya (Mrs. B).

I sincerely hope that she works with other candidates, takes some of their well thought out ideas, surrounds herself with visionaries and deliver a working association for us all.

At the end of the day, this Association belongs to us all and we must remain committed to its growth and values….
