I teach postgraduate courses on Somali history, society, and politics. I deliberately conduct oral examinations because I want to measure understanding, not memorization. These are graduates of different universities and working in different sectors. the very people who will become our future leaders, policymakers, educators, and professionals.

Yet, time and again, I leave the examination room with a heavy heart. I am deeply saddened by how little many of our brightest graduates know about Somalia's history, politics, and society. How can we rebuild a nation if those entrusted with its future do not fully understand its past? How can we solve today's problems without knowing how they came to be?

This is not a failure of our students; it is a wake-up call for all of us. The Ministry of Education, our schools, and our universities must urgently rethink what we teach and how we teach it. Somalia needs a curriculum that produces informed citizens, critical thinkers, and responsible leaders—young men and women who know their country, cherish its heritage, understand its challenges, and are prepared to build a better future. A nation that forgets itself cannot lead itself. The time to act is now.

One of the lessons from Somalia's collapse is that when power becomes concentrated in the hands of 1 person, others will inevitably resist. If the only source of authority is the gun, the response will be more guns. Viable l/ship comes from legitimacy and consensus, not force.

The violence in Mogadishu is a stark reminder of the need for lasting peace through dialogue. Sadly, such incidents recur at the end of presidential terms. This cycle will continue unless independent transitional institutions are established to manage transitions peacefully.

My two cents:
I have been covering Somali politics and security for 35 years now. Whenever Somalia has political crises and difficulties, most of its elites tend to blame foreigners for the majority of the shortcomings - from Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Egypt, to Ethiopia and Meles Zenawi, Italy and Bettino Craxi, Mohamed Sahnoun, Mahiga, Turkey, and the UAE.

I’m not saying all foreigners are blameless, but Somalis should also look at themselves in the mirror. Somalis are front and center in their own challenges, and only they can overcome them.

Some helpful actors were maligned and eventually forced to completely abandon Somalia. We are seeing it happen all over again, time and again, over the years. We know who they are. If you don’t know, read the history.

You can’t stop foreigners from pursuing their own national interests - that is not in your hands. But you can solve your own problems, because that is in your hands!

Many Turkish analysts sound strongly biased against Iran, echoing pressure narratives as if Israel’s campaigns stop with one state. Power politics rarely works that way. Once one rival is weakened, the next capable actor comes into focus. Western alliances offer no immunity.

Today I sat with a respectable elder from Isaaq and a very smart young analyst from Dhulbahante, discussing Somali politics. Many important details were exchanged. I learned a lot. What remains, however, is that Somalilanders (who in their extreme boil down to Isaaq) are not willing to give up Somaliland’s dream about independence, while Dhulbahante will not give up their dream about Somali unity. Ignoring one or the other is foolish. These aspirations will not go away – ever! In my view, one has to come up with completely new ideas how to settle the pending conflict in northern Somalia, which actually concerns Somalia as a whole. The point cannot be to threaten and try to subdo each other forever. Rather, a grand new idea must be developed that makes sure that the balkanization of the Somali people is halted and new togetherness can emerge.

When HSM took office in 2022, I was very optimistic that by 2025, Somalia would eliminate the isbaaro checkpoints and the government would have full control over the southern part of the country. by that prediction, we reinvested in our farm by adding more fields and constructing additional water wells, believing that by 2025 Somalia would be prepared to end food insecurity. However, it seems we are still at square one and now all our investments is gonna result isbaaro guys to get more money from us.
