On Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka (Independence) Day, I’d like to highlight some quieter progress this tumultuous year.

1. Malaysia’s poorest state, Sabah, removed all 10,825 households from its hardcore poverty list

[“hardcore poverty” is when a household doesn’t even earn enough money to meet basic daily calorie & nutritional needs]

2. Malaysia ranked #1 globally for Muslim-friendly & Islamic tourism, eking out Turkiye, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, UAE & others.

And last year, Malaysia ranked #1 globally in the open data inventory (from #67 / 193 just three years back)

3. Rules governing Malaysia’s national trust fund (KWAN that saves natural resource wealth for future generations) were updated, and now limit future withdrawals only to education, health, and climate adaptation.

For sure, many challenges remain but today is a good day to appreciate some of this quieter progress.

Foreigners are shocked why Malaysians voted against PM Anwar.

Anwar cut the fiscal deficit three years straight (first time in MY history) and Malaysia posted record FDI in 2025. He also scored big and charmed as ASEAN chair. If you ask Grab driver in Singapore, they even grumble Ringgit is strong.

Because ground sentiment runs on a different feed from Bloomberg (or the Singaporean Grab driver). Malaysians debate Malay rights, whether non-Malays eating pork deserves headlines (yes, that made the news), and why Anwar handed a federal ministry to a Malaysian Chinese lady instead of Malay. That is what stirs voter emotion.

To Balaji and Network School. The more u harp on how much money u invested in Malaysia, the more u r falling onto the same conundrum above. Unless it’s ur plan all along to force an exit.

Did Anwar pass the economy test? I’d say yes. But telling voters their inflation is lower than Singapore or Indonesia’s wins zero hearts. Nobody benchmarks groceries against Jakarta. The average Malaysian has exactly one comparison: what roti canai and petrol cost last year.

Macro is graded by economists. Elections are graded at the mamak stall.
