So, two years ago I lost all of my posts and followers after I deactivated my Twitter account and didn't know there was a time limit to reactivate it. So starting from scratch.
Indeed, US connection considering machinery, weapons, alliance vs ISIS at the time, and even salaries via Baghdad, was one of most under-covered subjects in the war. I tried to raise this with parliamentarians and wrote about it here, with little success.

Hard to forget the thousands of Shiite Iraqi fighters - describing themselves as jihadists - who poured into #Syria either.
Alongside other #IRGC-affiliated groups, they formed the bulk of pro-Regime forces in #Aleppo province during the offensives that followed the Russian intervention in 2015–2016.

There are a lot of stupid takes out there, but the idea that the US chose to support Assad collaborators (in the PYD/YPG, and explicit and declared allies in the PKK) instead of his enemies against ISIS as a way to undermine him I think wins the prize.
The PYD chapter is closed...
Support from the US to PYD was entirely aimed at destroying Assad's Syria. It was about depriving Assad of natural resources and grain. Once this was achieved, the PYD's existence became unnecessary. Furthermore...

يجب تصحيح المسار سريعا
So a very rough breakdown of what happened with Syria.
1) Assad had been backing away from Iran for years, he talked to Israeli, he (maybe) leaked info on IRGC ops but also his regime had been deeply penetrated by Israeli intelligence. Tehran knew this and was mad about it.
