On this date June 16 in 1944, at age 14, George Junius Stinney, Jr. became the youngest person executed in the United States in the 20th century.
Stinney was convicted in a one-day trial by an all-white jury of murdering two white girls after a rushed investigation and disputed confession with no physical evidence presented.
His conviction was vacated in 2014 after a judge ruled the original proceedings unfair, highlighting racial injustice under Jim Crow laws. #OTD

He has multiple grounds for an appeal. He had an all white jury in a racially charged case. The district attorney removed potential Black jurors during jury selection without strong, race neutral reasoning, which is called a "Batson Violation". The judge had errors in his instructions to the jury on what self defense is.
