These cards belong to one of the most enduring and consistent systems in the Western divination tradition: the Petit Lenormand. It takes its name from Marie Anne Lenormand (1772-1843), the 19th century's most famous fortune-teller and perhaps the most influential cartomancer of her era - one whom even Napoleon Bonaparte consulted. However, the name is purely ironic: Lenormand herself didn't design these cards. After her death, publishing houses in Paris and Germany produced the decks bearing her name, turning her fame into a marketing tool.
