CM Shri @DKShivakumar, in light of the strong public opposition, has said that he will revisit the Parks (Preservation) (Amendment) Act, which provides for 5% diversion of park land, and has also said that he is open to suggestions.

Despite my earlier experience of him not considering any of the suggestions given by me, other public representatives, experts and citizen groups, I am still writing this letter to him with renewed hope, offering suggestions for Bengaluru.

The suggestions:

1. Make reducing private vehicle dependence the central objective of Bengaluru’s mobility policy.

2. Restore the authority and independence of the BMLTA.

3. Stop the Short Tunnel project at Hebbal and protect Hebbal Lake.

4. Withdraw the 5% park land diversion amendment and drop the Tunnel Road project.

I hope the CM will use this opportunity to course-correct and put Bengaluru’s long-term interests above his political prestige.

The Bill allowing the diversion of up to 5% of parkland across Karnataka has been passed today. This has been brought specifically to facilitate projects like the Tunnel Road through Lalbagh.

It is a sad day for everyone who cares about protecting our environment, our parks and the rapidly shrinking green spaces in our cities.

I have written to the Hon’ble Governor, requesting him to return the Bill to the Legislature for reconsideration. I hope better sense prevails.

Whatever happens, our fight to protect Lalbagh, and Bengaluru’s green spaces will continue.

When Shri Yellappa Reddy sir, a 90 year old who has dedicated his entire life to protecting Karnataka’s forests, parks and soil, and who has served as Secretary of the Department of Forests, Ecology and Environment, speaks out, we must listen.

I sincerely hope the administration and leadership of the Government of Karnataka will pay heed.

A provision allowing up to 5% of a Park or Garden’s total area to be alienated through sale, lease, gift, exchange, mortgage or otherwise is seriously concerning.

Our parks, forests, and natural spaces belong to the people of Karnataka. They are not simply assets to be transferred or monetised. Once we compromise these spaces, we may not get them back.

This is about what kind of Karnataka we want to leave behind for the next generation.

Around 233 shops encroaching on the footpath between the Historic Bengaluru Fort, Victoria Hospital and KR Market were cleared today by the BLR Central Corporation.

Many of these were permanent metal-fabricated structures erected using forged documents purportedly issued by the erstwhile BBMP, completely blocking the view of the Historic Fort and leaving no space for pedestrians in one of Bengaluru’s busiest corridors.

After finding the documents to be bogus, the Hon’ble High Court directed the occupants to vacate within 15 days. Authorities waited 20 days before carrying out the clearance today, marking a major victory for the lakhs of citizens who use every day.

Among all Karnataka Cricketers of the 1990s, Sunil Joshi stands out. His journey was the most difficult. Travelling from Gadag to Hubli everyday to practice Cricket was a huge challenge.
