I was today years old when I learned that Ezio and Sonic The Hedgehog were voiced by the same actor. Wtf I'm mindblown.

Maybe fan art was a bit much. You can do that, but it's not a necessary step to become friends. More so just organic convo about the thing that brought you there in the first place. It's the same as asking a stranger to immediately get into a relationship with you day one.

People are clowning on this, but I think I get the point the op was trying to make. This is about befriending someone whose art you find online, and giving a compliment works much better there as an icebreaker than asking to be friends when the other person doesn't know you.

So, the point isn't to get an artist's "approval" by praising them, but rather being nice to them to open a possible conversation. Asking to be someone's friend when they don't know you is a hard sell. Maybe it's a cultural difference, but that's not how friends are being made.
