Colonisation is a genuinely insane concept. It could only have come out of the mind of a European.

I'm from Badagry in Nigeria, and I have literal cousins from a different branch of the family in Whydah (Ouidah), which is now in Benin just across the border. We use the same family surname, but they spell it "Houndegnin". Same pronounciation, same language, but because they're apparently from a "Francophone" country and I'm from an "Anglophone" one, we have to spell our family NAME differently to match the linguistic rules of English and French, and since our native-fluency languages (English/Yoruba and French/Fon) are different, we can only communicate with each other in broken French and pidgin.

We're family members with the same surname whose homes are less than 100KM from each other but we can no longer converse in the same language!
