AI is built on five layers. Energy. Chips. Infrastructure. Models. Applications. These layers explain who advances, who slows down, and why the next decade will reshape global compute. 1. Energy is the foundation. AI is now pressuring power systems worldwide. Scaling intelligence at the required pace cannot happen without large and reliable energy expansion. Any constraint at this layer restricts what is possible above it. 2. Chips are the engine. Semiconductors set the ceiling for speed and efficiency. A lead here matters but can shift because chip production is a manufacturing discipline. The groups that innovate and manufacture at scale control the rate of progress. 3. Infrastructure decides deployment speed. Building a modern AI data center is not simple construction. It requires coordinated power design, cooling systems, advanced rack density, fiber routing, and specialized equipment availability. Jensen Huang noted that from the moment ground is broken to the moment an AI supercomputer becomes operational, the timeline can reach up to three years or more.
