It’s essential to clearly define your #Farming objectives. These objectives might include producing meat, milk, or breeding stock for other farmers.

If the objective is breeding, management will focus on high-quality foundation stock, batch breeding, a detailed breeding plan, and a strong record-keeping system. If the objective is profit-making, management will emphasize low-cost infrastructure, a simple management system, minimal staffing to reduce labour costs, and good financial management.

Consider the resources needed or available for your farming goals:

🔹️(1) LABOUR:

Labour can include both untrained (either casual or regular) and trained/skilled personnel. Goat management skills and experience of the staff, as well as access to veterinary support, are essential. It's important to have an efficient labor-to-animal ratio, as too few animals per worker can be uneconomical. For example, commercial enterprises with more than 140 goats are typically more profitable than medium-scale operations with about 33 goats, which are, in turn, more profitable than small-scale farms with around 16 goats.

🔹️(2) CAPITAL:

Capital is divided into fixed capital and circulating (working) capital. Fixed capital is needed for setting up farm structures such as housing, fencing, and equipment. Circulating capital is used to fund the production cycle, including purchasing inputs like supplements, drugs, equipment, forage seeds, fertilizers, irrigation equipment, building materials, and fencing. Returns on initial capital investment are crucial. Goats or sheep kept on a commercial or medium scale, as well as dairy goats, typically yield higher returns on capital than small-scale operations.

🔹️(3) LAND AND FEED RESOURCES:

The size and type of land, along with current fodder production, will impact flock size. Consider whether any land is irrigable for forage production and whether land rights are long or short-term. Feed resources should be allocated for both maintenance and production rations. Unfortunately, most small ruminants are only fed maintenance rations due to a lack of planned objectives. Current production systems are often low-input, low-output, resulting in lower productivity. Investing in production rations can help achieve specific targets, such as reaching a desired weight by a certain age with feed supplements.

The availability of high-quality goats as foundation stock is key to building a productive herd.
