Fourteen Nigerians were kidnapped along the Lagos-Benin Expressway, but what happened afterwards is the part I think deserves serious attention.

At about 9:30pm on July 30, troops of 4 Brigade Nigerian Army were on routine patrol when intelligence reached them about the kidnapping in Ovia North East LGA of Edo State. They didn't wait until morning. They immediately moved after the kidnappers and followed their withdrawal route.

The pressure became too much for the criminals. They abandoned 11 of their victims and escaped into the surrounding forest.

But three people were still missing.

And this is the part I love so much. Our soldiers didn't say, "Well, we have rescued 11 out of 14." They didn't close the operation and celebrate what they had already achieved. The following day, July 31, they went back into that forest and continued searching for the remaining victims.

They combed the area until those remaining three people were found and rescued.

Just imagine what those families must have been going through throughout that night. Eleven families had received the news they desperately wanted, while three others were probably still waiting, praying and wondering where their loved ones were. Then came the news that the remaining three had also been found.

After medical assessment and preliminary debriefing, the Army confirmed that all 14 victims were in stable condition. They were reunited with their families or allowed to continue their respective journeys.

This is why timely intelligence from ordinary Nigerians matters so much. Somebody provided information, troops acted on it immediately, kidnappers were forced to run, and 14 Nigerians who could have remained in captivity are free today.

The criminals themselves are still being hunted, and I hope that part of the operation continues until they are apprehended.

Sometimes we read "14 kidnapped victims rescued" and scroll past it like it's just another headline. But those are 14 human beings. Fourteen families spared days, weeks or possibly months of uncertainty and fear.

Kudos to the troops of 4 Brigade Nigerian Army and Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun. Keep the pressure on these criminals. Every Nigerian rescued from captivity is a victory worth celebrating, and every forest denied to kidnappers makes our roads and communities a little safer. 🇳🇬

Recovery: EFCC Hands Over N42 million to Businessman

The Ag Zonal Director, Benin Zonal Directorate, Deputy Commander of the EFCC, Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad on Wednesday July 29, 2026 handed over a bank draft of N42 million to Ebesunun Mathew Edonojie, being the sum recovered by operatives of the Commission from fraudsters that defrauded him.

Edonojie, a businessman dealing in cement had in 2022 petitioned the Commission that one Ogiemwonyi Godwin defrauded him of N175,392, 000. The petitioner  stated that he transferred the sum of N350,784, 000  to Godwin for the supply of 116 trucks of cement but that he was supplied with 58 trucks leaving a balance of 58 trucks which amounted to N175,392,000.

During investigation, operatives discovered that  Godwin transferred N280 million to Dangote Cement Company but diverted the balance of N70 million for his personal use and supplied 58 trucks leaving a balance of 58 trucks of cement.

The suspect became inaccessible and unreachable but through the consistent effort of operatives of the Commission, the Commission recovered N116,000,000  which was previously handed over to Edonojie before recovery of additional N42,000, 000

Receiving the draft, Edonojie expressed deep gratitude to the Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, the Ag Zonal Director, Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad and the entire staff of EFCC at the Directorate for the wonderful work. Edonojie said he lost hope completely about ever recovering the money as the suspect became inaccessible. “I lost hope completely. I did not even believe that I could recover the money as the man (suspect) was nowhere to be found.  I am more than grateful to the EFCC, the Chairman, the Zonal Director and the entire EFCC, for the good work they are doing. It is only God that can reward you all.  EFCC has become my saving grace and I am going to tell everybody how the EFCC saved me. I could not sleep because I borrowed the money.  EFCC has wiped away my tears.” he said.

Presenting the draft, the Ag Zonal Director, assured that the Commission will continue to discharge its duties professionally to ensure justice for all. “We will continue to discharge our duties professionally and responsibly by ensuring that fraudulent people do not get away with their crime and that innocent people do not suffer unjustly.”

NIGERIA POLICE FORCE REPATRIATES WANTED WILDLIFE TRAFFICKER TO SHANGHAI, PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

The Nigeria Police Force, through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja, has successfully arrested and repatriated a Chinese fugitive, Cai Jinlian, 42, to the People’s Republic of China to face charges relating to the trafficking of endangered wildlife.

Jinlian is wanted for smuggling approximately 12 tonnes of tree pangolin scales from Nigeria into China in two consignments between November 2018 and April 2019, following investigations by the Anti-Smuggling Sub Bureau of Wenzhou Customs. His two accomplices were convicted and sentenced to over 14 years’ imprisonment by the Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court of Zhejiang Province in December 2020.

After fleeing China to Egypt on July 12, 2019, a warrant for Jinlian’s arrest was issued on March 24, 2020, followed by the publication of an INTERPOL Red Notice on May 10, 2020. Intelligence later established that he had relocated to Nigeria around 2023, moving between Delta and Plateau States. Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of INTERPOL NCB Abuja arrested him in Abuja on July 18, 2026, and repatriated him to Shanghai on July 29, 2026, under bilateral police cooperation arrangements to face the pending charges.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olutunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, commended the professionalism and dedication of the INTERPOL NCB Abuja team in the successful operation, charging the Environmental Crimes and Works of Art Team to intensify intelligence-led efforts against wildlife trafficking and other transnational organized crimes. He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening international law enforcement cooperation through INTERPOL and other strategic partnerships to combat transnational crime and protect endangered wildlife.

Fugitive drug kingpin, ex-int’l footballer bag 24 years jail term for cocaine importation

…Convict’s re-arrest after 10 years on the run demonstrates NDLEA’s doggedness in tracking down fugitives and ensuring no drug trafficker escapes the long arm of the law, says Marwa

A fugitive drug kingpin, Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu, and an ex-international football player, Hunkarin Segun George have been convicted and sentenced to a combined total of 24 years imprisonment by Justice Musa Kakaki of the Federal High Court, Lagos, for unlawful importation of 7.050 kilograms of cocaine into Nigeria.
Chinedu was first arraigned in September 2015 on a one-count charge marked FHC/L/227c/2015 for unlawfully importing 6.250 kilograms of cocaine. He pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail, but jumped bail midway into trial and remained at large for nearly 10 years. He was eventually re-arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Tuesday 24th June 2025, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, while attempting to smuggle 800 grams of cocaine on an inbound Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa. He was a frequent flyer known for conveying clothes from Turkey to Nigeria and foodstuffs from Nigeria to Turkey.

Investigation showed that the convict was coming from Turkey on Ethiopian Airlines flight but transited through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he collected the luggage from another person before heading to Nigeria. Further checks revealed that an accomplice who turned out to be a former professional footballer, Segun George Hunkarin, was waiting for Chinedu at the airport carpark to collect the consignment from him. Hunkarin who had stayed years in Brazil playing for football clubs was promptly tracked and arrested at the carpark.
In his statement, Hunkarin claimed that while playing professional football in the South American country, he had only trafficked drugs twice from Brazil to Ethiopia.
Both Chinedu and Hunkarin were subsequently arraigned on a three-count charge marked FHC/L/669C/2025 for unlawful importation of 800grams of cocaine. Delivering judgment on Friday 24th July 2026, Justice Kakaki sentenced Chinedu to 20 years imprisonment without an option of fine for the unlawful importation of 6.250 kilograms of cocaine, and a further two years, also without an option of fine, for conspiring with Hunkarin to unlawfully import 800 grams of cocaine, bringing his total sentence to 22 years. Hunkarin was sentenced to two years imprisonment on the conspiracy charge, bringing the combined jail terms to 24 years imprisonment.
Reviewing the facts of the case, prosecuting counsel, Barrister Adekunle Adebajo, reminded the court that Chinedu had earlier been arraigned before Justice Salihu Saudi (now retired) in 2015 on the same importation charge but vanished after being granted bail. Citing a plethora of legal authorities, the NDLEA prosecutor urged the court to sentence the convicts in line with the relevant provisions of the NDLEA Act.
Defence counsel, Chief Benson Ndakara for Chinedu and Chief Emefo Etudo for Hunkarin, had pleaded with the court for leniency and urged that fine options be considered in lieu of custodial sentences. The court, however, after a careful review of the submissions, cited authorities and tendered exhibits, sentenced both convicts to prison terms without any option of fine.
Reacting to the conviction, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the judiciary for the judgment, describing it as a reaffirmation of the courts' commitment to ridding the country of drug trafficking and those who perpetrate it, no matter how long they evade justice.
