It did have a huge impact on contemporary OS design even then, but broader market forces held it back in the micro generation that I'm not sure would have accelerated had they been able to monetize it. 5/5

That Unix was able to make the jump at all and not be lost to time is a testament to its design - which has its problems but ridded us of even worse ideas ubiquitous in the systems that preceded it. 4/5

@georgewsinger @CasazzaNY @dhanuraashi We did get all the benefits of it - that's why we're here talking about it. It is ubiquitous in servers and embedded devices today and it's hard to argue it could have gone better imo. 4/4

@georgewsinger @CasazzaNY @dhanuraashi But the competition was not about Operating Systems it was about hardware, and Unix lost because the cheaper mass-market hardware rapidly closed the gap on workstations. Linux (a UNIX clone) came around right in time for the Internet revolution and the rest is history.

@dhanuraashi It was of course under their tight control once management realized they had something, but the distribution system that enabled wide availability across the many systems that existed then wouldn't have been possible if it hadn't first received that early popularity.
