I just hate the tendency to treat the question as a proxy for race. If someone asks me where I from I'll say Texas cause thats where I was born and raised. If you want to know my race or ethnicity have the balls to ask.

Treating “Where are you from?” as some sort of racial slight has always been a sign of insecurity/shame.

If you’re proud of your identity, you should be eager to yap about it at length. But if you’re secretly embarrassed of it, then such a question would make you huff.
