Um grupo de sacerdotes e seminaristas da Fraternidade Sacerdotal São Pio X decidiu permanecer em plena comunhão com Roma, abandonando o cisma e os erros de Lefevbre.

Esses padres fundaram a FSSP com aprovação oficial da Santa Sé.

Lefevbre achava que eles se renderiam até mesmo chegando ao ponto de abrir mão da Missa Tridentina. Ele estava errado.

A FSSP faz uso exclusivo da Missa Tradicional (rito de 1962, pré-Concílio Vaticano II).
