There is a question often thrown at those who protest and march for the Palestinian people on the streets of London- Why do you care so much about a “ conflict” thousands of miles away? It is not a genuine question- It is an accusation built on the premiss that there must be a sinister motivation, rooted in hatred. There is an answer which speaks to the principle that lies at the heart of all internationalist solidarity- that justice has no borders- that an injury to anyone anywhere is an injury to everyone everywhere. It is an answer that is also a riposte to those organising what is a hate march tomorrow- the far right - who believe that what truly binds people is not a common humanity but the identifying markers of nationality, race, religion or ethnicity . But there is a second answer which Karma Nabulsi the Palestinian academic and activist always used to give to this question- “Because Palestinian history is British history.”

Tomorrows march is both a protest and a commemoration. It commemorates the Nakba, the catastrophe enacted between 1947 and 1948, which saw the state of Israel established through a process of mass ethnic cleansing of Palestinians - Over 750k driven into exile including most of my extended family- over 500 Palestinians towns and villages wiped off the map. This great crime was the inevitable outcome of a Zionist project driven by the belief that the Jewish people had a right to colonise Palestine and establish their own state. This was a truth openly acknowledged by Jabotinsky – the Godfather of revisionist Zionism , the ideology, which ,through Likud, has dominated Israeli politics in the last 78 years. He once wrote “ it is utterly impossible to obtain the voluntary consent of the Palestine Arabs for converting Palestine from an Arab country into a country with a Jewish majority". Such a project ,he knew , could only be enacted via the use of overwhelming force. But the Nakba which is protested tomorrow is not a moment of historical trauma but an ongoing process of enforcing a system of racist domination though ethnic cleansing, colonisation, dispossession, murder , torture, and now genocide. And the roots of all of this lie in the Balfour declaration , and the 28 years of British mandate during which the British state, accepting the racist logic of Zionism laid the pathway for the inevitable act of violent dispossession that is the Nakba . Remember Balfour’s words “Zionism , be it right or wrong, … is rooted in age long traditions…. In future hopes of far profounder import than the desires and prejudices of the 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land” Never mind that when Balfour wrote those words , those 700k Arabs constituted 94% of the population.
Not only has Britain never acknowledged its historical responsibilities, it has for 78 years, continued to be a willing partner in the enactment of Israel’s system of racist oppression, maintaining that active complicity even as the crime of apartheid descended into the crime of genocide.
So those marching tomorrow do so because they understand this history .They march because they understand that opposition to the racism that will be exhibited on the Tommy Robinson march ,which threatens the future of marginalised communities in the Uk, demands opposition to all systems of racist oppression wherever they exist. Nelson Mandela understood this when he said that the freedom of the South African people from the chains of apartheid would be incomplete until Palestinians were also free. That is why people will chant as they march tomorrow – in our thousands and our millions we are all Palestinians. This is not a march of hate . It is a march in support of the principles that bind us all, rooted in a love of our common humanity.

🗞️ Leaked body-camera footage obtained by Haaretz contradicts Israeli police claims surrounding the violent arrest of a Palestinian Israeli prosecutor in southern city of Be'er Sheva, showing officers storming his apartment, pinning him down, and “beating [him] mercilessly,” despite no visible resistance, according to his lawyers and footage.

The prosecutor was hospitalized and underwent surgery for a broken nose and serious injuries to his eye and kidneys.

The raid began after an off-duty officer living nearby filed a noise complaint, then entered the apartment without a warrant alongside two other officers.

After the family demanded they leave, police later returned with reinforcements, forced their way inside, and arrested the prosecutor along with two relatives — a doctor and nurse at Soroka Medical Center — who were also repeatedly beaten during the raid. All three were imprisoned for three days.

According to testimony, officers mocked the bleeding prosecutor during and after the beating, while Israeli police later accused the family of assaulting officers.

My father Stephen Lewis is spectacularly uninterested in social media, so I’m posting this myself (though he has read it and is prepared to suffer the indignity of all I'm about to reveal).

When he was Canada’s ambassador to the UN from 1984-88, Dad was truly shocked by the regularity of open, vitriolic antisemitism in the cocktail parties and ambassadorial receptions that surround that crucial but flawed institution.

For this reason (among others) he’s always been the one in our family with the deepest atavistic fear of antisemitism. He was sympathetic to the idea of Israel as a refuge longer than the rest of us.

This is no longer the case. Like so many Jews who for decades adopted the dominant narratives of Zionism, he can no longer defend the current actions of the state of Israel.

He now regards Israel as a rogue state, committing genocide and other crimes against humankind, which ought to be opposed by every tool and tactic in Canada's diplomatic arsenal.

To return to the personal, seven years ago my Dad was diagnosed with a vicious cancer and was given as little as 3 months to live. It’s a sublime understatement to say that he’s a fighter - but he has persevered in life with a tenacity familiar from his political, diplomatic and humanitarian pursuits.

Which brings us to this morning, when at 87 years old, he spent an hour standing at the side of the road in his old riding of Scarborough West. Standing up as a Jew against genocide. Standing up for justice for Palestine. Standing up on the right side of history, where the vast majority of humanity currently stands.

I’ve never been prouder, never more humble before the stubborn principle and insistent moral clarity of the guy I’m so lucky to call Dad.

People of Canada: don’t stop talking about Palestine.
Starvation as collective punishment can never be forgiven.
Burning and burying children alive can never be defended.
Stand up against genocide until we make it stop!

Finally, after a long search through all the hospitals and medical points run by foreign medical organizations, after three years of losing our home and losing my sister Zein’s wheelchair, after dozens of times of displacement while I carried her on my shoulders, after a struggle that cannot be described and after she was deprived of many of her most basic rights…
Today, finally, we found a wheelchair for my sister Zein, who has cerebral palsy.
Our happiness today is beyond words — mine, my family’s, and Zein’s.
We surprised Zein with this gift, and it was one of the most beautiful moments we have lived. We went out and walked in the streets, and the sun was strong and warm, but our hearts were warmer than the sun.
Today was not an ordinary day…
It was a day that held something of dignity, something of life, and something of the joy we have missed for so long.
Thank you to everyone who stands with us, helps us, and helps our people.
