we started day 4 with an elephant safari and tbh most of us felt a sense of discomfort during & after it. went to a tea estate and tried a variety of teas and then luckily ended up spotting a great hornbill couple. all of us just sat down in the tea estate for half an hour looking at them.
the guide told us hornbills mate for life. when the female hornbill lays eggs, she doesn't leave the nest for 3 months. she sheds her feather & seals their nest completely, except a small slit for the male to provide food through. this is the most vulnerable time for them because if during the nesting period anything happens to the male, the female & the babies would perish. fascinating how intricately designed nature is (1/2)
