قال الإمام النووي عليه رحمة الله:
واعلم أن الإسرار في القراءة والتكبيرات، وغيرها من الأذكار، هو أن يقوله بحيث يسمع نفسه، ولابد من نطقه، بحيث يسمع نفسه إذا كان صحيح السمع، ولا عارض له، فإن لم يسمع، لم تصح قراءته، ولا غيرها من الأذكار بلا خلاف

Al Imām An Nawawî said:
Know that being silent (with the voice being of low pitch) in recitation and chanting takbēr, and with other than them from adhkaar, is for the individual to say those such that he's going to make himself hear (what's being said of adhkaar or recitation).
Fudhayl bn Iÿād, may Allah be merciful to him said: Do not despise the paths of guidance for its few people (threading it) so you don't get deceived by the multitude of those destroyed.
