🇰🇷 South Korean investigators suspend efforts to detain president after dramatic standoff.
The CIO called off the arrest warrant enforcement Friday afternoon citing the safety of the people on the ground, according to a statement. The warrant, which is valid until January 6, remains in effect and could be extended.
After suspending efforts to detain Yoon, the CIO expressed “deep regret” at “the suspect’s attitude of not following the process by law” and said they would decide on next steps.
Crowds of diehard supporters were gathered near the presidential residence despite frigid temperatures, with some camping there overnight. Many of those held signs with the phrase “Stop the steal” printed in English, while others waved American flags."

🆘 Federal investigators and local law enforcement in #NewOrleans are trying to determine if the suspect used a long-gun rifle, and was firing it into the crowd while running people over on #BourbonStreet , three senior law enforcement officials briefed during investigation.
The vehicle used in the incident is also an intense focus for investigators, who are using the license plate, a #Texas plate, to try to glean more information on the suspect.
🇸🇾 Syria; What caused the uprising?
While lack of freedom and economic woes drove resentment of the Syrian government, the harsh crackdown on protesters inflamed public anger.
Arab Spring: In 2011, successful uprisings - that became known as the Arab Spring - toppled Tunisia's and Egypt's presidents. This gave hope to Syrian pro-democracy activists.
That March, peaceful protests erupted in Syria as well, after 15 boys were detained and tortured for writing graffiti in support of the Arab Spring. One of the boys, a 13-year-old, was killed after having been brutally tortured.
The Syrian government, led by President Bashar al-Assad, responded to the protests by killing hundreds of demonstrators and imprisoning many more.

🇵🇸 Gaza hospital director held at notorious Israeli military detention center, recently released detainees say.
The prominent Palestinian hospital director who was arrested by Israel in a raid that closed the last major functioning health facility in northern Gaza is being held at a controversial military base that doubles as a detention facility, recently released former detainees have told CNN.
The Israeli military said on Saturday it had detained Dr. Abu Safiya because he was “suspected of being a Hamas terrorist operative,” and claimed that the hospital was being used by Hamas as a “command and control center.” The military did not provide any evidence to support the claims.
The director general of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Munir al-Barsh, said Abu Safia was severely beaten with batons and sticks by Israeli forces, who forced him to strip and put on clothes meant for prisoners.

NEW: Parents of OpenAI whistleblower hire private investigator after their son allegedly took his own life, suggest their son was killed.
The parents of 26-year-old Suchir Balaji say their son had plans to see them in January, claim there were "signs of a fight."
"I was the last person to talk to him. He was happy more, not depressed or anything. And it was his birthday week," said his father Balagi Ramamurthy.
"He made plans to see us in January. That was the last phone conversation he had with anyone. He went into his apartment and never came out. How can anyone believe that there was no note left?" his mother said.
"And there was nobody else on the scene, that doesn't mean they can just come to conclusion. And we have seen the blood shots in the bathroom, signs of a fight in the bathroom."
The tragedy in San Francisco happened three months after Balaji accused OpenAI of violating copyright law in their development of ChatGPT.

🇰🇷 South Korea, JEJU AIR CRASH
According to News1, a man who was waiting at the airport for a family member aboard the flight shared the last message he received.
At 9 a.m., just before the crash, his family member wrote via KakaoTalk:
"A bird struck the wing and we can't land."
When the man asked how long this had been happening, the family member replied a minute later, "Just now. Should I make a will?" They have not been reachable since.
The Boeing 737-800 initially attempted to land but was unable to do so. It then circled the airport and tried to land again, but the plane veered off the runway. The aircraft subsequently collided with a structure at the end of the runway, bursting into flames at 9:03 a.m.
It marked the deadliest aviation disaster in the country's history since the deadly 1997 Korean Air plane crash in Guam that killed 225.
The authorities confirmed 177 deaths from the accident, and said two crew members were rescued, with the remaining two classified as missing.
Of those on board, 82 were men and 93 were women, ranging in age from as young as 3 to 78 years old. Many were in their 40s, 50s and 60s.

Raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital has put this last major health facility in North Gaza out of service.
World Health Organisation Said "The patients in moderate to severe condition were forced to evacuate to the destroyed and non-functional Indonesian Hospital.

😡 Widespread condemnation has followed the decision of Iceland’s outgoing government to grant 5-year whaling permits to two companies, Hvalur hf and Tjaldtanga. This will allow over 400 whales (209 fin whales and 217 minke whales) to be caught each year until 2029.
Isolated in allowing such cruelty, only Iceland, Japan and Norway are issuing whaling permits.
Please keep up the pressure and urge caretaker president Bjarni Benediktsson to end the hunts: https://t.co/umldakMEsy
