Dora Akunyili didn’t just do a difficult job. she faced literal gunfire for insisting that Nigerians deserved real, safe medicine.

After nearly eight years leading NAFDAC, she was appointed Minister of the Federal Ministry of Information and Communication in December 2008, extending her national impact beyond pharmaceutical regulation into broader public service.

Stage 3. Measurable, Historic Impact:

Under her leadership, counterfeit drug sales in Nigeria dropped by an estimated 80%, with her strategies cutting fake drugs and food in circulation by 70% during peak enforcement. it was a fundamental transformation of the regulatory system

Despite this, she remained undeterred, famously stating that drug counterfeiting was “the greatest evil of our time.”

The response from counterfeiters was severe they burnt down NAFDAC offices, trashed laboratories, and threatened her family’s lives. She survived a shooting attempt in her car, where a bullet grazed her skull.

She found that a World Health Organisation survey had revealed more than half the drugs on sale in Nigeria were counterfeit or sub-standard. Rather than managing the problem quietly, she built a new team of inspectors, began prosecuting importers of fake drugs & upgraded premises

Stage 2. The Call to Public Service (2001):

She was appointed Director General of NAFDAC in April 2001, stepping into an agency facing what would later be described as one of the greatest public health crises in the country’s history.

Before entering public service, Akunyili built her career as a pharmacist and academia working as a senior lecturer and consultant pharmacologist in the College of Medicine at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN)
