Mark Zuckerberg’s latest Wall Street Journal essay raises one of the most important questions in AI today:
Not when we’ll achieve superintelligence, but who will control it.
He argues that concentrating superintelligence in the hands of a few institutions would create an unprecedented concentration of economic and political power. History offers little evidence that concentrating transformative technologies has produced the most equitable outcomes.
One thought experiment from the essay captures the concern perfectly.
Imagine only one person had access to a superintelligent lawyer. Even if their legal position lacked merit, they would still possess a decisive advantage over everyone else in court. The problem isn’t the lawyer itself. It’s the imbalance created when only a select few have access to capabilities that everyone else lack.
That principle extends far beyond the courtroom.
If frontier AI remains concentrated within a handful of organizations, those organizations won’t simply build better products. They’ll shape scientific discovery, healthcare, education, software development, financial markets, cybersecurity, and public policy. Access to intelligence becomes an enduring competitive advantage.
History points to a different model.
Linux became the backbone of modern cloud infrastructure because it was open for anyone to inspect, improve, and deploy.
Python became the language of modern AI because an open ecosystem encouraged global collaboration instead of restricting participation.
