It is a remarkable feeling to realise that, 196 years ago this month, my 4× great-granduncle was putting pen to paper, writing a letter that recorded details of a shared family history. Pictured: my 4× great-granduncle, his Bostonian wife, Mary, and her family.

The First Recorded #Handwritten Letter (c. 500 BCE)

Ancient Greek historian Hellanicus credited Queen Atossa of Persia (wife of Darius the Great) with writing the earliest known personal #letter around 500 BCE.

Though its content is lost and it may have been more of an official message, it is widely regarded as marking the start of #letterwriting as a distinct practice for communication over distance. #yearoftheletter
