A Tale of Two Monuments

These two photographs were snapped in central Auckland today, Easter Sunday, 31/iii 2024. The locations are 670 metres apart.

On the left is the Rainbow Crossing Monument on Karangahape Road. On the right is the New Zealand Wars Monument on Symonds Street.

Three days ago the Rainbow Monument was covered in white paint. New Zealand's police called this a "hate crime" -a specific offence fabricated by police as there is no such crime in New Zealand law.

No expense was spared investigating this non-crime. Police dedicated huge resources the investigation, executing a search warrant raid on suspects' home within 24 hours. Apparently seeking cans of white paint.

No expense was spared by Auckland City Council either. Also within 24 hours the white paint had been removed by council contractors, re-exposing the Rainbow Monument.

125 years ago the Victoria League unveiled the The New Zealand Wars Monument, commemorating those who fell in the land wars. Constructed of marble and bronze, it took the community more than two decades to raise the funds commencing in 1901.

Several years ago it was heavily vandalised. It was daubed in red paint and political graffiti, and letters of the inscription were chipped from the plinth.

No police personnel have ever been assigned to investigate the vandalism of the War Monument and Auckland Council has not repaired the damage. The alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia regularly discarded underneath it are also left in place, as the monument is left to fall derelict.
