At ground, western society is divided at a metaphysical level. On one side, although most don’t realize it, is a metaphysics rooted in Realism. On the other is a metaphysics rooted in Nominalism.
The Australian government has already passed laws that have their ground in nominalism.
Once the courts concur with government law, there will be no limit to the monsters we will produce.

I believe the Shroud of Turin was forged by a medieval artist. I believe he chose a very expensive linen cloth to wow only the very few who would notice, matched the Gospel accounts in extraordinary detail, rejected the artistic conventions of his own time in many ways for the only known time in history, depicted crucifixion with striking anatomical realism, used real blood or blood-derived material instead of simply painting the wounds, created an unremarkable faint image whose most remarkable property would not be recognized until photography revealed it as a negative more than five centuries later, embedded three-dimensional image information that would only be discovered with modern image analysis, produced an image so superficial that modern microscopy still can’t explain it, anticipated details that align perfeclty with modern forensic understanding of crucifixion, executed the entire work without mistakes or corrections on a valuable cloth, he nailed it without error in one shot, invented a technique that no one has convincingly reproduced, left no record of how he did it, inspired no known followers, and did it to wow only us centuries later as nobody viewing the work at the time would even see it for what it is, and then disappeared from history without anyone ever mentioning the greatest technical achievement of medieval art.

Craig Hill gets a critique from @dhughesy rooted in material reality, tax settings, property investment, the everyday pressures squeezing families trying to buy a home or keep the lights on, and what does he do?

He doesn’t engage the substance. He doesn’t offer numbers, lived experience, or policy outcomes.

Instead he translates it instantly into moral failure: “personal attacks against people you know nothing about,” “try to do better,” “this is not humour,” and a condescending offer of a mental-health chat thrown in for good measure.

Notice the process

Material complaint goes in.

Moral verdict and character lecture come out.

This is the mechanism I described.

The governing class and its propagandists live separated from the consequences they help create, then use moral language to police anyone who notices.

The real strain on ordinary Australians, housing costs, bills, service collapse, disappears behind accusations of bad character or insufficient virtue.

Once you see the pattern, you see it everywhere. The debate is never joined on the ground where people actually live. It is moved to the courtroom of false moral decency, where the critic is put on trial , denounced and the system walks free.

That’s how the squeeze is maintained.

@dutchbuildings I love your use of “you know it when you see it”. Seems to me everyone, and we see it here in Australia, trying to define something that is generally not easy to define. Whereas, things like culture are more difficult to really define, but we know it when we see it.
