@MattGallagher0 I found this essential for a play I wrote 10 years ago, set in Afghanistan. Numerous veterans were generous & helpful, reading the play & giving excellent feedback, among them, @MattGallagher0@PhilKlay , Eric Cummings of @onviolence & others not on Twitter. Still grateful!
@Wildlife_of_NYC@MattGallagher0@PhilKlay Oh man, blast from the past! I love it.
Also, I think MC read the play, still, we loved that you reached out in that way.
@MattGallagher0 I just read a script about death, but the young 20YO writer thinks most old people die because they have no $, not say, pain.
But if you haven't held someone's hand as they die, well, how can you write about it?
Really, you just end up repeating what other movies have done B4
@MattGallagher0 I just read a script last year--for a fairly major war film that came and went without anyone seeing it--and the writer literally seemed to not understand chain of command or ranks in the military. It's almost embarrassing.
@MattGallagher0 And yeah, a lot of art is just making shit up, but there's a difference when you have no experience with what you're writing. You can't get at deeper truths.
@MattGallagher0 Not to get into the weeds/metaphysics, it just makes me wonder if the writer can really understand the "truth" of a thing. They're just making shit up.
@carryingthegun @B0stonJohn True story: on roll call in a Georgetown class @vermontgmg asked if I was Army of Dude. @Tmgneff was there but I can't remember what he said, something unfunny
Speaking as someone who's written/performed a Dan Carlin spoof, I want to say:
This is utterly insane.
I mean, we're trying to do jokes as well, but the knowledge, time and skill this must take is nuts.
@carryingthegun @wesleysmorgan That said, I recently read a script by a Navy SEAL in the same vein and got me thinking about all of this.
It's weird. This era seems to have already passed, almost. The lionization of SEALs/importance of Afghanistan and Iraq just isn't there.
It's strange/makes me feel old.
@carryingthegun @wesleysmorgan At some point, we're going to fix our blog and get this stuff back up there. Still one of the most frustrating things I've ever written about. The inaccuracies in that book and the politics are so frustrating.
This week and going forward, want to share some great fan art/sci-fi art and this week, it's quite obviously all about the ewoks, starting with this wonderful image by Audrey Lynn @AudreyEstok
It's just gorgeous.
@carryingthegun Aw man, Don, now we're going to feel like we're copying you, since we're trying to get our website up and running again to start posting occasionally. Lol.
That said, so, so, so glad to have you back and writing again!!!!!!!!
True story: As kids--like we were five or six--we really wanted to watch #Robocop, so our data edited a “children’s friendly version” version for us.
Total length: 48 minutes.
As soon as we came up with the idea to spoof podcasts, we knew we had to parody @CriminalShow, not just one of the best true crime podcasts, but one of the best podcasts out there. Period.
In our sixth episode, @PhoebeVJudge interviews one of the most famous police officers of all time for an episode of @CriminalShow set in an alternate future of Detroit.
