Gluniverse Refactor: Dev Update #2
This one is about the economy. And about the mistake I made.
The whole pitch of Gluniverse was "everything is limited". Fixed supply. Every unit worth something. Trading that matters. So every basic material got a hard world cap on how much could exist at once.
Then I spent months on sinks. Build more. Craft more. Burn more. Sinks and sinks and sinks. The answer was right in front of me the whole time.
Caps count what exists. Sinks count what people do. Gathering happens every single day whether anyone builds or not. Sinks only happen when players show up and spend. One slow day, gathering outruns building, the cap fills, and the faucet shuts for everyone. Scarcity that depends on everyone showing up isn't scarcity. It's a countdown.
And when it hit zero, it hit everyone. The whole world sat at its cap. Big stashes blocked everyone behind them, including every new player who logged in and found nothing to gather. A tradable economy where nothing can move isn't an economy.
The real fix was seeing that I'd been treating two different things as one.
Basics are fuel. Shit, straw, water, sap, hide, scrap, bone. The game burns through them constantly and needs them constantly. Fuel has to flow.
Rare stuff is treasure. Fishbone, iron fittings, keystones, frozen sap, land. Treasure should stay fixed.
I was rationing fuel like treasure. So I rebuilt supply from the ground up.
Basics are limited per day, not per world. No more world ceiling. Each player has a daily limit instead. Nobody's hoard can ever stop you from gathering again.
Basics don't keep. Raw basics rot about 3% a day, everywhere they sit: your bag, your stash, your chest, your tent, your market listings, your guild's bank. Leave 100 straw for a month, come back to about 36. Two months, about 13. Hoards drain on their own, no sink required, no active player required.
Crafted goods never rot. Bricks, gear, anything you built keeps its value forever. Turning raw materials into things is how you keep them.
Rare stuff is untouched. Same fixed supply as before. Now it's the only thing that's fixed, and that's the point: the line between "basic" and "rare" is finally a real line, not a slider.
What this means in play: no more "world full" refusals. Sitting on raw stock costs you every day, so the market has to move. New players always have something to gather. And the rare stuff stays rare.
The whole pitch in one line: basics are limited per day and don't keep. Everything else is limited forever.
Scarcity was a nice experiment. A failed one, on basics. I wanted a tradable economy, but I made the economy wrong. Now it's fucking right.
Landing tomorrow @gibglue
I’ve been in the trenches every day for about three years now. At first, I jumped into everything without knowing what I was getting into. I still remember very clearly when I put 3 sol into a frozen token… WTF!
Over time, the first groups of scammers showed up. Then some groups of honest people. A few victories amid so many defeats. A dream that was slowly turning into a nightmare. Then, all of a sudden, a glimmer of hope. A friend contacted me about joining an NFT project by a young, crazy artist, @shfred0.
It was @noctav1a. I thought to myself, “Damn, this digital art is cool… if absolute junk has reached a 20 sol floor price, Noctavia is sure to be a hit… such an amazing narrative…”
In fact, Noctavia immediately rose to a floor price of 1 sol, but after a while it dropped back down and then went up again, without ever really taking off. And I thought to myself, how is this possible? Why hasn’t any influencer backed this crazy project?
Maybe it’s just a fluke, let’s wait and see.
Then, about two and a half months ago, the same artist decided to launch a new token project with a truly insane vision: solana:NpqoucNKKJ62PwikH4NBvTm3R7mgREXoTtv7nJSGLUE. Within a few hours, the token hit an all-time high of 780k. I said right away, “Damn, this is going to be a massive hit.” The artist/dev @shfred0 linked a space game, @gluniverse, to the token. Amazing. Built day by day, by hand, with a huge investment of money and energy. Compared to other successful games, it was, and is, clearly better. After two months, very few people on the ground gave this project any credit.
Because, like sheep, they’d rather lose thousands of dollars every day by following unscrupulous influencers who promote projects just to make more and more money off the backs of tens of thousands of poor, unsuspecting people. But what really got me thinking is something else. Why don’t organizations that claim to be independent promote valuable projects, but instead choose to promote worse ones?
What interests are behind this? Why don’t they help people of value, dedicated to their work, instead of creating hype around low-quality products?
Yeah, because in this world, that’s all that matters. Hype. If Silent posts something, no one will say, “Oh shit, bro, that’s so cool.” But if @solanagaming says, “This project is amazing,” everyone rushes to play it, everyone rushes to invest, like a herd of stupid sheep.
Someone might say, “But are you sure that project you’re talking about is really that cool?”
Yeah, guys, it is… it’s too cool to sit on the sidelines.
And if I’m proven wrong, and the project dies because of this shitty system, don’t ever tell me again that merit is always rewarded. Because that’s just bullshit.

Yooo thanks for taking a look @solanagaming ! I see my friends have already filled you in but this amazing game is going to be releasing the beta on September 1st, which introduces the new 3d world! We’d love your support to get more eyes on this.
Also, what am I going to post about now I don’t have to @ you every day?

Beautiful! This dev impresses me everyday but one thing I know he has always understood is atmosphere. You see it in Noctavia and here it is again now. I can’t wait to chill in the rain with the bros.
I think it’s very important to mention this again for everyone playing Gluniverse alpha right now.
Gluniverse is Gluniverse.
The game you know and love isn’t being replaced with the beta, it’s going to IMPROVE.
The four-direction movement with WASD stays exactly as it is 1:1, and items, mobs, maps, and everything you already have will not change.
NOTHIng is being erased or reinvented and the world you know is still there.
The big rehaul is about creating a completely immersive experience around that same game, an unique, hybrid visual style where 2D sprites exist inside a fully 3D world.
This last part is especially important to me, because it’s not just a graphical upgrade, this update will really convey my final vision for what the Gluniverse actually is.
I think every human being, at some point, has felt like they’ve been catapulted into a world that wasn’t made for them. A world that feels unfamiliar, overwhelming, sometimes even absurd and yet somehow, you have to find your place inside it...That’s the feeling I want Gluniverse to have.
Imagine these little 2D creatures, the same creatures you already know, suddenly being catapulted into a massive 3D world.
>They are still 2D
>Their identity is still the same
>Their items are still the same
>Their maps are still the same
>Their movement is still the same
But the world around them has changed, that contrast is the heart of this rehaul. That contrast IS the world. That contrast IS Gluniverse.
Excited about the alpha > beta
Hopefully I can share an updated timeline soon :)
