WAHO DRIVES A NEW REGIONAL MOMENTUM FOR HEALTH KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND SHARING IN WEST AFRICA

The West African Health Organisation (@OoasWaho) organised a Regional Capacity-Building and Training of Trainers Workshop for the West African Health Information and Documentation Network (#WAHIDN) from 14 to 18 July 2026 in Lomé, Togo.

The workshop brought together archivists, librarians, health information specialists and resource persons from ECOWAS Member States to strengthen the sharing of documentary resources and improve access to health information across the region.

The workshop enabled participants to acquire practical skills on the new WAHIDN Common Database, developed on the DSpace platform, as well as on document harmonisation techniques, metadata standards, indexing, interoperability and documentary research tools. Particular emphasis was also placed on the opportunities offered by digital technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance the visibility and accessibility of scientific health research across the ECOWAS region.

Among the workshop's key achievements were the finalisation and adoption of the revised WAHIDN Statutes and Rules of Procedure, the establishment of a regional pool of trainers, and the development of a roadmap to accelerate the deployment of the Common Database in Member States. Participants also made recommendations aimed at promoting regional open science policies, strengthening the capacities of health information professionals, and increasing the visibility of research produced in West Africa.

Participants also carried out demonstrations of the ROADIS portal and the #WAHIDN platform, which will enable member institutions to share their documentary resources through a common regional infrastructure, thereby facilitating the circulation of scientific knowledge and strengthening collaboration among ECOWAS Member States.

At the close of the workshop, @OoasWaho reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Member States in deploying the WAHIDN Common Database, strengthening the capacities of health information professionals, and promoting open science to support evidence-informed health policies and further strengthen health systems across the region.

WAHO Joins the BMZ Call to Action to Accelerate Large-Scale Food Fortification and End Child Malnutrition by 2030

The West African Health Organisation (WAHO) has officially endorsed the Call to Action on Catalysing Large-Scale Food Fortification to End Child Malnutrition by 2030, launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) during the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2026.

This global initiative brings together governments, international organisations, development partners, academic institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector to accelerate large-scale food fortification as a proven, sustainable and cost-effective solution to combat malnutrition, prevent micronutrient deficiencies and improve maternal and child nutrition.

By endorsing this commitment, WAHO reaffirms that no child should be left behind because of preventable malnutrition. In line with its Regional Nutrition Strategic Plan, WAHO will continue to support ECOWAS Member States in strengthening regional nutrition policies, harmonising regulatory frameworks, promoting multisectoral partnerships and expanding equitable access to fortified foods.

Large-scale food fortification is one of the most effective and cost-effective public health interventions to combat hidden hunger and improve the health and development of future generations.

Together, we can accelerate progress towards ending child malnutrition and build a healthier, more resilient and prosperous West Africa by 2030.
