A certain Chelsea fan who hadn't called me in years suddenly decided to call me in the afternoon on Saturday to tell me that PSG would beat us. I respectfully disagreed and rejected his prediction.
Interestingly, he didn't call during the first half, nor did he call after the final whistle. But the moment we lost, my phone rang. Not only did he call to mock me, but he also had his phone on speaker while his friends joined him in laughing and making jokes at my expense.
This is the same person who couldn't find the time to call and congratulate me when we won the league title, yet he was quick to reach out after a defeat.
We shared some good memories as church friends years ago, but tonight marks the end of that friendship for me. I have blocked his number and will be removing him from all my social media platforms as well.
Why am I sharing this? Because life has a way of revealing people for who they truly are. Sometimes, the signs come in the smallest situations.
Yes, football comes with banter, and there is nothing wrong with healthy rivalry. However, some people use banter as a cover to display their real character.
Over time, I have learned that not everyone who calls themselves a friend truly deserves that title. Some people only show up when they have an opportunity to mock, belittle, or celebrate your disappointment.
I've had enough of such friendships, and I'm choosing peace over pretense.
Congratulations to all us GOONERS. We move forward together.
