For years people acted like self-driving safety was all about perception — what kind of LIDAR, radar and cameras are you using?

In the real world, we see that it is all about understanding. The issue here wasn’t whether LIDAR could see something or cameras could see something. It’s about just understanding the scene and doing the right thing.

You could construct a self-driving car with a variety of different sensor suites that could handle this properly, but the key isn’t the sensor suite — it’s the deep learning, the understanding that gives you safety.

The sensor suite needs to be sufficient to see, sure. But it really doesn’t take much to beat what a human can see. They only look in one direction and are frequently distracted.

It happened again.

This time the Waymo blocks the firetruck and then trapped it into a corner as the firetruck tries to get enough space to go around the Waymo.

Why is the Waymo trying to bully the fire into a dead end?

How can that possibly be the route for the Waymo?

You can see the frustration from these first responders as they are actively involved with a scene and have to direct their attention towards battling a Waymo.

In the last 60 days, Waymo collisions have resulted in 68 tows. This is separate from the July 4th incident which needed 50-100 tows. In the same time period, zero Teslas needed to be towed. $TSLA

An overnight accident left this Waymo without a straight body panel. This was a multi vehicle accident that included a street light coming down.

No information regarding passengers.

Tesla FSD reportedly avoided a crash by moving onto the shoulder just before impact.

According to the driver’s frame-by-frame analysis, FSD began reacting about 0.17 seconds before the at-fault vehicle started moving toward the Tesla.

The other vehicle ultimately crashed into two cars, while the Tesla sustained no damage. No injuries were reported.
