I spoke to a cousin today and asked her how things were. This is what she said:

It's horrible. The mental trauma we have, the emotional rollercoaster we are going through... it has affected us physically at this point. Me and my sister have a garment house here and wedding/festive season is a big season for us but for 5 months, Manipur has been dead, no celebration, no weddings, no festivities... Nothing is certain, there will curfew imposed suddenly and then life just gets shut. And it's always scary because we don't know what will happen anytime .. if there are paramilitary forces, we are advised to stay alert since they might come assault us for no reason. Everyday since May3 hearing & seeing news of violence, it's something we never imagined. We were so happy earlier with music, festivals and what not. The hill people also use to come down when there were concerts, valley people would also go to the hills for festivals like Shiroy Lily but all that is gone now ... it's very emotional and sad for us ..

In India, the law says that even if there's no dead body or it's impossible to identify burnt remains, someone can still be charged and found guilty of murder if strong evidence shows that a murder happened.

The Supreme Court has looked at English court decisions from the 1950s and said that not finding a dead body doesn't mean a person accused of murder can escape punishment.

Two, if #Meiteis go for a joyride in the hills, should they be prepared to face such severe consequences as death? What kind of justification is that? On the other hand, you proudly proclaim to the world that you are peace-loving, God-fearing people persecuted by the majority Meiteis.

Are you seriously saying that the hills and valley divide is akin to the line of control between Pakistan and India?

Human rights activist Babloo Loitongbam has a compelling message.

Some kind of negotiation process has to start. We can't continue living like this indefinitely. People in the camps are surviving on rice and water. Whose benefit does this conflict serve?

The poppy harvesting season is set to start in November, and everyone is discussing it. Yet, nothing is happening. Why dont you destroy this, to begin with?

According to India's intelligence report, the harvest is estimated to be between 50,000 crores to 70,000 crores, and people are eagerly waiting to capitalise on this money. If you don't eliminate this problem, the conflict will persist.

Why isn't the central government taking the initiative to root out this issue? People are eagerly waiting to seize this money, maybe it is the election season and it is required. For heaven's sake, if you don't address this elephant in the room, which is this black money, the conflict will continue.

It's more than just the angry #Meitei and #Kuki groups fighting on the ground. There are many individuals in very powerful positions who stand to gain from this conflict. They are the ones perpetuating it, not ordinary people who have been stirred up and emotionally charged into fighting each other. They are the scapegoats.
