Firstly, I strongly condemn the illegal dumping of refuse and firmly believe that anyone found guilty of such acts should face appropriate and stringent sanctions. Environmental responsibility is a duty we all share.

However, we must also be honest with ourselves. The Lagos State Government still has significant work to do in improving waste collection and disposal across the state. The current system is clearly under strain and, in many areas, is no longer sustainable.

Today, many households across Lagos struggle with waste disposal because of the inconsistency of PSP operators. In some communities, residents have not seen PSP trucks for as long as three months, forcing them to keep heaps of refuse within their compounds. Unfortunately, when heavy rains come, some people resort to dumping waste into drainage channels, hoping the floodwaters will carry it away. While this is wrong and unacceptable, it also points to a systemic challenge that requires urgent attention.

Perhaps it is time to consider further decentralising waste management by empowering each Local Government and LCDA to oversee waste collection within their jurisdictions. Since these councils are closest to the grassroots, they are better positioned to monitor service delivery and respond to the needs of their people. Residents could also make payments directly to their respective councils, ensuring greater accountability and transparency.

At the state level, there is an urgent need for increased investment in waste management infrastructure. We need more compactors to be strategically located, waste bins, and clearly designated collection points that encourage waste segregation by separating recyclable materials from organic and other waste.

I also think that Lagos needs more approved dump sites and landfills. With a population of over 20 million people, relying primarily on facilities such as Olusosun, Solous, and Epe is unlikely to be sufficient to meet the state’s growing waste management needs.

Another major issue frequently raised by PSP operators is the poor condition of roads leading to the dump sites, as well as the multiple fees allegedly collected by touts at these locations. If the state must regulate access through designated personnel, then the process should be transparent, the charges should be standardised across all approved dump sites, and the access roads should be rehabilitated. I have personally seen the condition of the road leading to the Olusosun dump site, and it is quite disappointing to say the least.

Ultimately, achieving a cleaner Lagos requires shared responsibility. Government must provide efficient, reliable, and accessible waste management services, while residents must dispose of their waste responsibly. Even with an improved system, there will still be individuals who choose to violate the law, and they should face stricter enforcement and appropriate penalties.

At the same time, both the state government and the local governments will continue to be held accountable towards providing the infrastructure, policies, and services necessary to ensure a cleaner environment, better public health, and a more sustainable Lagos.

Good he should have done more

When Buhari became president in 2015.... A 50Kg of Rice was about N12,000....

Nigeria was producing about 3 million metric tonnes annually....

Buhari through The CBN initiated the Anchor Borrowers program.... Investing over N1.2trillion on about 4 million farmers especially in the Rice sectors...

With almost 80% of them being Northerners....

To protect this investment... The Buhari govt locked the borders and ban rice importation..

This policy grew Nigeria rice production to almost 6 million tonnes...

Which was almost double the 2015 figure...

That was where the good news ended...

Despite the increase in production.... Rice prices grew to almost N45,000 in 2023 when Buhari left office... Almost 300% surge....

There was mounting pressure on Buhari to open the borders for rice importation....but we stood with Buhari because we felt the job growth must be sustained and scarce FX conserved...

At the end of Buhari tenure.... Only about 40% of the disbursed N1.2trillion was repaid.... Almost N800billion. Was seized by these farmers...

Safe to say like politicians they looted over N800billion

The same farmers who couldn't pay their debt... Vowed to sponsor Emefiele Presidential ambition..released hundreds of millions of Naira for him to purchased forms buy cars....

As Emefiele probably assured them of more free access to CBN as president....

Tinubu decided to end the fraudulent program when he became president.... These immediately angered the 80% northern genuine and social media farmers not removing their 20% southern counterparts.. Their conduit pipes to the national treasury was gone...

Most of the Northern social media warriors and some of their southern counterparts attacking Tinubu today were all beneficiaries of the Emefiele anchor Borrowers windfall... Many never had farms at all.....

To make matters worse the rice farmers collectively tried to punish Tinubu by massively increasing price of rice to over N120,000 from N45,000 in less than one year....

Tinubu has since cured their krays with rice importation....

Did it crash Nigeria rice production?.....

Slightly..... about 6%...

Did Tinubu abandon Agriculture......No...

Tinubu has capitalized the Bank of Agriculture with N1.5trillion..... these angry Tinubu haters don't want to obtain a securitize loan they will pay back....

Nigeria N800billion gone... Swallowed by those hoping Tinubu will be Emefiele....

Instead of atoning for their sins they are angry with those who ended their criminality against Nigeria...

There was a little girl in church, about 5, and her parents obviously let her get dressed herself that day because she came waddling in with the puffiest coat on in the summer in North Carolina. She comes and sits in the pew in front of us. 15 minutes into mass she turns around and hands my husand an orange. Her parents are mortified.

"Savannah not again!" They scold! (Again kills me)

They appologize and she turns back around. A few moments later she goes to hand me an orange but her parents grab it from her before she can.

Savannah is determined. She reaches her tiny fists into her puffy coat and pulls out two more ornages. She begins to distribute them. Her parents are now beat red and in shock. There is no stopping small Savannah now.

This small child proceeds to laugh a laugh I can only call maniacal (in a Catholic church) unzip the inner line of her coat and releases what had to have been 20-30 of those little kid oranges into the pews.

WE EAT Savannah yells cackeling

Waste management can't function effectively at the State level. It has to be decentralized to the LG while the State provides the regulatory oversight. Waste management fees should be a part of council tax per household. Inspection and monitoring should be at LG level.

I have just received fresh reports from the field and I must commend the teams on ground for sustaining the momentum beyond the sanitation hours. At Mosan bus stop and the Caterpillar blackspot along Ipaja road, massive evacuation of waste has been carried out and the area is now cleared. Along the Egbeda bus stop inward Iyana Ipaja, median evacuation is currently ongoing and the transformation is visible. At Ipodo in Ikeja, our teams are on ground with the Dino bin actively evacuating accumulated refuse.

The situation at Iba town along the LASU - Igando Road is being tackled head on as we speak because the humongous waste heaps there are being evacuated and will soon be a thing of the past. I have also been briefed about the ongoing tipper evacuation under the Trade Fair bridge along the Lagos Badagry expressway and the clearance work there is in full swing. These are not just isolated operations, they are the direct result of LAWMA's sustained intervention and our zero tolerance policy for environmental nuisances.

I want to assure every Lagosian that what we started with the monthly sanitation exercise is being backed up with continuous enforcement and clearing operations across the State. We will not rest until every blackspot is turned into a clean and safe space. This is the new order for a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

As part of our sustained efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public sanitation across Lagos State, we currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets strategically located across the state for residents and visitors.

However, government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible. This collaborative approach will significantly complement government efforts and expand access to sanitation facilities across the state.

At the same time, we continue to enforce environmental sanitation laws. Individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. These measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment for all.

Access to sanitation is a shared responsibility. While government continues to expand infrastructure, residents and businesses must also play their part in ensuring Lagos remains clean, safe, and habitable.
