Beware of these types of ‘gastritis’:

Nikhil was convinced what he was suffering from was gastritis.

I told him that his discomfort looked more like a cardiac problem.

He was not convinced.

I told him that his ECG was showing significant changes.

Nikhil didn’t change his mind.

I said ‘let’s do an angio and decide’ and after I did the angio and showed him that one of his blood vessels is totally blocked, Nikhil still had a tiny little doubt.

Once that block is cleared and his “gastritis” was better, he was smiling and totally convinced that what he had was not gastritis but indeed a heart problem.

Triumphant, I was lecturing him about the need to make a right choice when evidence is pointing to something that you don’t believe.

Nikhil said: “But I did make the right choice by coming to a cardiologist (me) despite having what I thought was gastritis. Didn’t I?”

All the while he was arguing that he had ‘gas’, he was suspecting it could be something more.

Patients are much more intelligent than doctors: Not at times, most of the time.

Beware of these types of gastritis symptoms as they could actually be related to heart:

1. A new onset severe burning or a new TYPE of burning
2. Burning that increases on walking.
3. Burning associated with discomfort in arms, throat or jaw.
4. Burning with giddiness, excessive sweating or breathing difficulty.
5. Any sort of chest burning in high risk patients like diabetics and smokers.
