Memories:
2 cardboard washing machines were placed in front of an adult audience. I was fake loaded into the 1st & a white girl was pulled out of the 2nd to shouts of ‘Persil washes whiter than white’ I was the only one in the room that knew how wrong that was. I was 8.
Holding conversations about race:
Saying ‘This is a safe space’ are merely words that do not provide the conditions of safety.
What do you need to feel safe in conversations about race?

@Miss_Snuffy Overly questioning is a form of bullying; a communication style that on the surface seems like an innocent inquiry but it is more than likely to be about controlling the conversation and inflicting discomfort.

She must have felt comfortable and confident asking those horrible, racist questions in the first place. Where did that comfort & confidence come from?!
Incredibly brave from Ngozi Fulani to call it out.
@chantellelunt This from @SusanCousins6 and @BarryDiamond is perfection... "where are you REALLY from" is a microaggression to let you know you don't belong.

The instigator is hoping to pocket the knowledge, to shore up their own stereotypes. They are expressing covert views about immigration and a deep distrust regarding your status as a citizen of this country.

This question is a challenge to your citizenship where the underlying message is the implication that you don't belong, that you shouldn't have rights and access to this country; that you belong somewhere else.

People of colour in the UK have had to put with the "where are you really from" question all our lives. It's exhausting, tedious, upsetting and IT IS TIME IT STOPPED.
