outside the blast radius of an airburst which in several seconds will flatten eighty million trees across two thousand square kilometers without leaving the impact crater everyone will spend decades looking for. do not place the chair exactly upright among the fallen trunks. do not leave my accountant sitting in it. do not determine the purpose of the Roman dodecahedra. do not wear one as a . glove. do not plant twelve of them in northern Gaul with slightly different hole diameters and wait seventeen centuries for archaeologists to become personally irritated. do not hide a thirteenth under my mom's empty chair where every face shows the same room at a different age. do not delay the Year Without a Summer until 1817. do not move Mount Tambora to Switzerland. do not warm Lake Geneva just enough that Mary Shelley never dreams of a pale student kneeling beside the thing he assembled. do not replace the thing with my orthopedic surgeon. do not make Lord Byron suggest a ghost story in which the real monster is shared custody of the horse. do not explain Last Year at Marienbad. do not tell the woman she met the man last year. do not tell the man she met somebody else. do not move remove the knife from the loaf. do not sit at the table with three later versions of yourself and pretend only one of u remembers why the telephone is off the hook. do not visit the Zone in Stalker. do not walk in a straight line. do not throw the metal nut farther than the Writer can see. do not let the Pofessor unpack the bomb. do not answer the telephone in the Room. do not ask for money or health or happiness because the Room gives the thing beneath the thing u say and nobody has inspected what is beneath my request not to telegram my ex wife. do not explain The Holy Mountain to my accountant. do not let the thief climb the tower. do not make wax copies of his sleeping body. do not gather the seven richest people in the world around the alchemist's table. do not turn excrement into gold while the horse is watching. do not shave everybody and lead them up the mountain only to discover immortality was a camera pulling backward from dinner. do not speed up Jeanne Dielman peeling potatoes. do not remove one minute from washing dishes. do not move the tureen. do not tell her the coffee tastes wrong beforre she tastes it. do not replace the missing button on . the coat. do not arrive at 23 quai du Commerce with the exact potato whose absence would have kept the sequence of rooms, clients, baths, meals, money, and silence from slipping one degree out of . alignment. do not watch The Turin Horse during a storm. do not help the old man dress. do not make the daughter eat two potatoes. do not persuade the horse to leave the stable. do not draw water after the well goes dry. do not relight the lamp after the flame refuses oil. do not tell them the wind outside has been making the same sound for six days because there is nowhere else left for weather to go. do not enter the house from The Exterminating Angel after dinner. do not tell the guests the doorway is unobstructed. do not walk across it to demonstrate. do not brign sheep through the drawing room. do not repeaat the exact arrangement of the first night and expect repetition to release anybody. do not notice.. that my dentist has been sitting near the piano since before the servants left. do not ask the people in Werckmeister Harmonies to go home. do not tune the piano to equal temperament. do not look into the eye of the enormous stuffed whale. do not let the Prince speek from behind the curtain. do not join the crowd when it crosses the square, enters the hospital, destroys each room, and finally becomes still before the naked old man standing in the bath because there is no instruction for what comes after seeing him. do not take the third part of On the Silver Globe back to the Polish ministry in 1977. do not bury the costumes on the Baltic shore. do not edit surviving footage around streets full of ordinary people staring into the camera while a voice describes all the scenes that were never filmed. do not let the astronaut become a god merely because his descendants forgot enough words. do not teach them the word orthopedic. do not place my mom inside The Color of Pomegranates. do not make her hold the wet wool, the silver bowls, the bread, the books drying on a roof, the white chickens, the red cloth, the dagger, the pomeranate bleeding onto linen, or the face of the poet repeated as man woman child monk angel and body. do not ask which object is symbolic. do not tell her all of them when she is already carrying too much. do not interrupt Wavelength. do not enter the loft before the forty five minute zoom reaches the photograph of waves. do not movve the dead man. do not answer the telefone. do not turn down the rising sine wave. do not let the room become less of a room one narrowing fraction at a time until the photograph fills everything and the only possilbe movement left is into water that was never there. do not manufacture ball lightning. do not contain it in a hallway. do not believe repors that it passed through a closed window without breaking the glass, drifted around the room with apparent intention, smelled of ozone and sulfur, entered a barrel, killed one animal but not anotehr, and vanished throuhg a wall after several seconds because the reports do not agree and the wall has declined to comment. do not stand beneath a green flash at sunset and insist the sun has briefly become a different object. do not calculate atmospheric refraction while my mom is watching. do not let the last sliver of the solar disk bend through layers of warm and cool air until shoretr wavelengths scatter away and one impossible green edge remains exaclty long enough for the orthopedic surgeon to say he saw blue. do not create a brinicle under Antarctic sea ice. do not let deense supercooled brine descend as a finger while seawater freezes around it ito a hollow tube. do not follow the tube to the seafloor where it continues outward as a creeping path of ice that traps starfish and sea urchins too slow to move. do not put one clean spoon inside the tube to learn whether the silent jar was hhre first. do not demonstrate triboluminescence by crushing sugar in a dark room. do not use wintergreen candy. do not separate electrical charge across a crystal fracture until nitrogeen in the air repsonds with a tiny blue ultraviolet spark. do not crush more candy because the first spark looked lonely. do not let the horse watch from the doorway and revise its understanding of teeth. do not resolve the Mpemba effect by starting with two identical containers of water at different temperatures and waiting to see whether the hotter one freezes first. do not allow evaporation, convection, dissolved gases, frost insulation, supercooling, container geometry, or the definition of frozen to change while nobody is loooking. do not telegram the result to Aristotle because he already mentioned something like it and will become unbearable. do not make a Leidenfrost droplet run uphill. do not heat a surface far above the liquid's boiling point so the bottom vaporizes into an insulating cushion and the droplet hovers on its own gas. do not cut asymmetric teeth into the surface so escapin vapor pushes it in one direction. do not aim that direction toward Belgium in 1831 when the paperwork is still wet. do not ask why nearly every amino acid in terrestrial life is left handed while most sug ars are right handed. do not place mirror organisms togeth er in one room. do not give them identical gloves. do not let circularly polarized starlight, week nuclear forces, mineral surfaces, autocatalysis, frozen meteorites, and one very patient accident each claim they chose the handedness first. do not observe the quantum Zeno effect continuously. do not prepare an unstable system and measure it so rapidly that repeated observation prevents the state from evolving. do not look away to see whether looking was the cause. do not place my dentist beside the apparatus with instructions to stare at the silent jar until decay becomes embarrassed and postpones itself. do not cool a dilute gas of bosons to within a fraction of a degree above absolute zero until their individual quantum wavefunctions overlap and a macroscopic number occupy the same ground state. do not point at the Bose Einstein condensate and say now they are all one thing. do not ask which atom is my accountant. do not remove one atom and expect the accounts to remain balanced. do not send one photon through a double slit. do not measure which path it takes. do not erase the path information later. do not delay the choice until after detection. do not describbe interference fringes as the photon going through both openings, neither opening, every possible route, or one route that becomes factual only when the rest are made unknowable. do not replace one slit with the narrow space between my ex wife and the orthopedic surgeon on adjacent train seats. do not let the jar tunnel through a classically forbidden barrier merely because its wavefunction has a nonzero amplitude on the other side. do not say the probability is negligible when the universe can keep trying. do not let the jar emerge with the labels reversed, the spoon missing, its internal clock advanced by no agreed duration, and Telegram already open to a conversation thhat does not exist in this branch. do not create strange matter. do not allow a stable strangelet containing up donw and strange quarks to toucch ordinary nuclei. do not speculate that it could convert them into more strange matter one nucleus at a time until the planeet becomes a compact hot lump with roughly the dimensions of a building. do not put the horse in the building. do not tell the horse the conversion is only hypothetical after its left side has developed a new flavor. do not trigger vacuum decay. do not let a bubble of lower energy vacuum nucleate anywhere in the observable universe and expand at nearly the speed of light, rewriting particle masses, forces, chemistry, memory, Belgium, taxation, marriage, cinema, horses, jars, and every distinction between my mom and the surgeon before any warning could arrive. do not add a warning anyway. do not make it say changes may be permanent. do not place a magnetar closer than ten light years. do not let a neutron star with a magnetic field a trillion times stronger than Earth's erase the magnetic stripes from every card, pull iron from blood, deform atoms into long cylinders, fracture its crust, and release in one tenth of a second more energy than the sun emits in one hundred thoussand years while the notary inssts the horse was never included in the original will. do not explain the baryon asymmetry of the universe by hiding one antiproton after every billion and one protons. do not let matter and antimatter anniiilate almost perfectly in the firsst fraction of a second except for the tiny excess from which every galaxy, person, unpaid invoice, spoon, molar, train ticket, pope, emu, pomegranate, and unmailed photograph will ltaer be assembled. do not ask why the excess chose this exact paperwork. do not let dark matter enter the house except gravitationally. do not notice that an unseen mass roughly five times greater than ordinary matter has already shaped galaxies, bent background light, held clusters together, passed through walls, crossed evrey room and every body without scattering, and gathered silently around the Milky Way in a halo large enow to contain all possible versions of the hallway while remaining unable to rotate the mattress. do not accelerate cosmic expansion. do not permit dark energy to increase the distance between sufficiently remote galaxies until their light redshifts beyond detection and every future observer believes the small gravitationally bound island around them is the whole universe. do not leave my cancelled passport outside that island. do not make its final stamp the last evidence that another galaxy ocne existed. do not assemble a Boltzmann brain from a thermal fluctuation after the stars have gone dark. do not let random particlse briefly form a conscious observer containing false memories of Earth, history, taxes, my ex wife, the orthopedic surgeon, the horse, the silent jar, every film it believes it watched, and this entire list it believes it was told not to complette despite having existed for less than one second in empty space. do not trust the Boltzmann brain when it says all ordinary observers are less probable than brains like itself. do not ask it for identification. do not accept a passport whose photograph is a statistical fluctuation and whose issuing country existed only as six matching atoms for one Planck interval. do not let the woman at the passport office recognize it from somewhere. do not wait for Poincare recurrence in a finite isolated system. do not allow enough unimaginable time for every accessible microscopic state to wander back arbitrarily close to an earlier arrangement so the room, planet, stars, molasses, Prague window, Marienbad corridor, frozen hallway, Telegram message, horse, and u return almost exactly as before except one clean spoon is now beneath the western curtain and nobody can establish whether this diffeernce caused the first recurrence or survived it. do not allow proton decay after at least ten to the power of thirty four years. do not let the remaining planets dissolve after star formation ends, black holes evaporate, galaxies cross one another's horizons, and matter itself becomes radiation so thinly distributed that a photon could travel for longer than all previous history without meeting another thing. do not let that photon carry a photograph of my mom. do not let the photograph approach a black hole. do not let an outside observer see it slow, redden, and freeze near the event horizon while in its own frame it crosses normally toward a singularity. do not encode every pixel across the horizon. do not tell the surgeon that information is both inside and outside depending on the description. do not ask him which copy he received. do not let the firewall paradox place a wall of high energy quanta at the horizon which preserves unitarity for the distant observer but burns the freely falling photograph, my mom, the surgeon, the train, the silent jar, the horse, the emu field marshal, the dead ppoe's borrowed fingers, the green flash, every left handed amino acid, and the woman from Marienbad before any of them can notice that the equivalence principle promised nothing locally unusual and that the only remaining way to reconcile the smooth horizon with quantum entanglement would require them to agre that the thing i absolutely did not mean when i said . do not under any circumstances allow the last surviving copy of
