On CBS 6, professional prohibitionist Kevin Sabet tried to sound like a kratom expert. Instead of naming the primary alkaloid mitragynine, he confidently called it "metratogene."

👉 The Setup: Claimed he knew the difference between natural leaf and synthetic 7-OH.
👉 The Reality: Collapsed them both into one demand for prohibition.

When an investigator decides the cause of death before the laboratory finishes its work, the public is no longer reading science. They are reading a predetermined narrative.

In Bonneville County, Idaho, the tragic death of Kielee Rustici was officially ruled an "acute mitragynine intoxication." The coroner told her family kratom "should be removed from stores" before the autopsy was even completed.

But the official file dismantles the botanical-overdose claim:

❌ The Ignored Pharmaceuticals: 15 prescription bottles were found in the room. The lab only tested for three substances. Drugs known to cause fainting and severe central nervous system depression—like Trazodone and Cyclobenzaprine—were found at the scene but intentionally excluded from the toxicology panel.
❌ The Mechanical Collapse: Kielee suffered from POTS, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and a Chiari malformation. She was found collapsed in a 44-degree room with her neck trapped at a severe 90-degree angle. That is a fatal mechanical asphyxiation event, entirely explained by her pre-existing autonomic disorders.
❌ The Missing Leaf: A 3,100 ng/mL mitragynine level would require a massive ingestion of raw powder. The medical examiner found exactly 5 cc (one teaspoon) of stomach fluid. Zero pills. Zero botanical material.

A plant cannot be blamed for a mechanical collapse just because an investigator decided not to test the pharmaceuticals on the nightstand. The public deserves the full record, not an edited story.

The police confirmed the fatal poisonings were caused by lethal doses of diphenhydramine (Benadryl), and one child was stabbed. This was a premeditated murder-suicide committed by deeply disturbed caregivers suffering from Munchausen by proxy. The lawsuit explicitly lists melatonin, Benadryl, and kratom as tools used for long-term abuse, but the actual murder weapon was Benadryl. Elevating a botanical to the center of a horrific stabbing and intentional poisoning is clickbait, not forensic science.

👉 30 of 57 don't even name kratom as the cause of death. (Causes include a gunshot wound, electrocution, and lung cancer).
👉 50 of 57 are NOT kratom-only.
👉 Only 1 record remains without other substances.

A toxicology detection is not a death certificate. Erasing a gunshot wound to blame a botanical is data manipulation, not science.

During a live C-SPAN broadcast, Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) President Kevin Sabet fielded a supposedly organic call from “Luke in Colorado” about marijuana-induced psychosis. The other guest had to inform the national audience that “Luke” was actually Luke Niforatos — the Executive Vice President of Sabet’s own organization.

It seems Smart Approaches to Marijuana took an ill-advised approach to advocacy.

New Jersey's "CJ's Law" is pushing to ban natural kratom based on one tragic death.

The official autopsy tells a completely different story:
