Leo Africanus never said this. In fact, he never even mentions Somalis directly even once. His entire book contains only one indirect reference, a passing remark about Somalia being the only Muslim polity in the Horn of Africa.

@hornaristocrat It’s not in the Latin edition it’s John’s own words he literally says so in his preface before the translation starts but yeah it dates pretty early to the 1600s and yes it doesn’t change much medieval Somalia and beyond was black regardless

Many European sources, and possibly some Chinese ones (I’ll have to check again), describe the inhabitants of Mogadishu and other Somali cities as black or dark skinned. However, Leo Africanus neither describes their appearance nor discusses Somalia in any detail.

@hornaristocrat It’s the same book (earliest + only manuscript) and it’s Italian. Which translation are you reading? Translators added material about lands Leo never described. And there’s really nothing to translate, it literally only says the Horn had a Muslim ruler nothing else about Somalia.

These are just Somali names, not deities. The actual false gods attested in pre-Islamic Somalia were Assabinus, mentioned by Pliny and associated with Jupiter/Zeus or the Sun, and Jesus, since there were Christians in Somalia. But there were Jews so some Somalis worshipped Allah.
