1/ Last Friday @ESO released this awesome image of the surface of Betelgeuse, taken with the SPHERE instrument. You may have read that SPHERE uses a deformable mirror to correct atmospheric turbulence. But how do we know how to deform the mirror? Keep reading!
Here's SPHERE's adaptive optics in action. A wavefront sensor monitors the "twinkling" of the target, and sends commands to a deformable mirror that reshapes more than 1000 times per second. Look how that messy turbulent blob suddenly resolves into several stars!
