“The reason I like Xiao Wuyi so much—I think everyone can tell just how much I favor this character—is because I feel that Xiao Wuyi is very different from the traditional costume drama male lead or general.

🐈‍⬛: “In the beginning, he always called Xie Jiayu by her full name. Back then, he was worried that something might happen to her, so he’d often speak to her in a very stern way. It was always, ‘Xie Jiayu! Xie Jiayu. I’m telling you, Xie Jiayu…’—that kind of tone.

Q: “At what moment do you think #XiaoWuyi’s feelings toward Xie Jiayu became, ‘I’ll give you the entire universe, no explanation needed’?”

#HouMinghao: “‘The entire universe, no explanation needed’…it means giving her everything, absolutely everything, right?

I think the most important scene for their relationship in the early part of the story is the ‘riding-through-the-targets scene.’ After that sequence, Xiao Wuyi completely falls in love with her. She falls a little later than he does. Before that scene, there had already been many moments—like what we were just talking about—where Xie Jiayu helped Xiao Wuyi. She became involved in his work, his family, and so many aspects of his life. On the surface, Xiao Wuyi seems bothered by her, but little by little he’d already gotten used to having her by his side, and he’d already started to like her.

But all of that still wasn’t enough for him to truly fall in love. It wasn’t until the moment during the ‘riding-through-the-targets’ scene, when she tied that red ribbon around him. I think it’s because he’s a young man and it was probably the first time he’d ever been that physically close to a girl. On top of that, because he wanted to protect the women living in the Xiao residence, he always deliberately kept a respectful distance from them. So this was his first time being that close to Xie Jiayu, with her tying the ribbon for him.

I also think Xiao Wuyi admires strength. He’s someone who respects strong people. Xie Jiayu, a girl, can voluntarily come onto the battlefield just to tie that ribbon on him, and then go beat the war drum. Beyond simply looking cute and pretty, what really moved him was her courage. When faced with danger, or with something that involved the bigger picture, she was willing to stand against everyone and step forward for his sake.

That kind of courage was something Xiao Wuyi had probably never encountered before. So aside from the close distance of that moment between them, what truly attracted Xiao Wuyi was her bravery and her strength of character as a girl. Because Xiao Wuyi is that kind of person himself.

Then there’s what she mentioned earlier, the unspoken understanding between them. When she was beating the drum, the way she struck it, the way he turned the horse…the sequence of movements made it feel like, in that moment, the two souls were completely in sync. I think both of them experienced that feeling for the first time. After that scene, Xiao Wuyi was completely, hopelessly in love.”

The thing is, I never wanted her to help me because I was afraid of dragging her into all of this. I even promised her mother that I wouldn’t let her come to any harm. Yet every time she gets involved, she somehow manages to touch the deepest part of Xiao Wuyi’s heart, the place that hurts him the most, and comfort him.

For example, she notices the wound surrounding his family. She wants to help repair the relationship between me and my mother. Or she realizes that even though Xiao Wuyi stubbornly insists his older brother shouldn’t return to the battlefield, deep down, more than anyone else, he’s longing for the day his brother can become a soldier again and stand on the battlefield once more. Xie Jiayu catches that. In her own way, she helps my brother find his footing again.

Every time Xiao Wuyi acts stubborn, she’s the one who sees right through him. In her own way, step by step, she heals Xiao Wuyi, and she also heals the people around him. To me, that’s what creates this invisible kind of ‘fishing’ for Xiao Wuyi.”

Like I said earlier, we really can’t judge him using ‘actor’ standards anymore. He’s genuinely professional. He sings incredibly well. His high notes are all mixed voice, and it’s the kind of mixed voice where the breath and vocal cords are balanced extremely well. Very relaxed, kind of leaning toward a Korean-style singing approach. You guys can observe how stable his airflow is. No matter how much power or dynamics he adds, his airflow never becomes excessive; instead, he continuously strengthens the downward support beneath the vocal folds. That means the burden on his vocal cords actually isn’t very heavy. His vocal function is excellent, and his vocal tension/support is very strong.

Even in moments where he’s clearly intensifying the emotion, he still doesn’t noticeably thicken the way he uses his vocal cords. That’s insanely impressive.

And I really have to emphasize his signature mixed voice. He uses a lot of pharyngeal tone, and a lot of his vocal pressure is created through changes in vowel shaping and diction, as well as adjustments to the oral and pharyngeal space. Because of that, the whole performance gives people a feeling of restraint and control. No matter how explosive he gets, he never crosses that red line. I think that kind of restraint comes from real experience and cultivation.

You can see that in the earlier fragmented and delicate vocal moments, he spent a long time laying emotional groundwork. Then even by the second chorus, he’s still controlling himself. His vocal interpretation leans more toward a controlled, delicate emotional direction, and the emotional aftertaste it leaves is very strong. I still feel stuck inside the emotions he created.
